PEP Grant

Who
- District 112 Elementary Schools were awarded the top national grant for physical education
programming promoting health, fitness, and conflict resolution strategies. Each D112 elementary school will be a part of the grant. Three community partners will also support and participate in the grant programming over the next two years. They are: Highland Park Hospital, North Shore Special Education District, and the Highland Park Recreation Center.

What
-This PEP Grant titled, PEP4LIFE received full funding to align with IL State Health and PE Standards by implementing various programs and strategies to increase movement and physical activity to benefit all children. D112 will achieve the grant goals by implementing the following: Peaceful Playgrounds, Fundamental Movement, We Count, and conflict resolution strategies.

When

For the next two years (2008 – 2010), D112 will be working to implement the programs, resources and technology provided by grant funds to improve a consistent district-wide aligned and standards based curriculum that encourages life-long wellness and positive behaviors and conflict resolutions on school playgrounds.

Goal
- The purpose of the Peaceful Playground Program is to introduce children and school staff to the many choices of activities available on playgrounds and field areas. Fundamental Movement provides students with a high quality motor skills curriculum. We Count! is a student walking program that uses pedometers and heart rate monitors. The implementation and quality of the programs to achieve the goals will be supported with new PE resources, pre and post testing, PE teacher hand-held data devices, wellness goal-setting, inclement weather options, site-based physical activity resources library that can be used by all staff, professional development and through community partnerships. Each D112 elementary school will receive the resources, learning opportunities, and technology to achieve the goals of the grant.

How Much
- The grant provides support to initiate, expand, and improve physical activity opportunities for students in order to help them make progress toward addressing state standards for physical education. This will be achieved through aligned and consistent curriculum, programs, resources, technology, and professional development. This federal grant provides $196,247.00 along with $24,298.00 District 112 Inkind funding for the two-year implementation process.

achieve the goals
