Types of Programs
There are several different types of second language programs for students, some of which are employed in District 112, others which are not. The following information is intended to be an overview of some of the programs available in different school districts throughout the country and the world. Also, feel free to visit the links provided to find out about valuable resources for students learning a second language and for information about places of international interest.
Second Language Program Types
The main types of second language programs for English dominant students are immersion programs, the FLES program, and the FLEX program.
In immersion programs, all subject matter is taught to children in the second language. In the FLES program, students receive second language instruction as a distinct subject three to five times weekly. The FLEX program introduces the second language through classes presented once or twice a week.
District 112 Dual Language Immersion Program
The aim of the Dual Language Program is to provide a world class education where children will become bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English while developing an understanding and an appreciation of all cultures. Children in the Dual Language Program experience the same District 112 standards-based curriculum as children in other classrooms. Students learn these subjects in both English and Spanish in a culturally rich setting.

Programs for English Language Learners
Second language programs for language minority students fall under two main categories: additive language and subtractive language programs. In additive language programs, the native language is maintained while the second language is added. Additive second language programs for language minority students include immersion programs and late-exit or maintenance programs. In subtractive language programs, the native language is used to gain proficiency in the second language, however, the first language is not maintained. Subtractive language program models include early-exit or transitional programs, or traditional English as a second language program models. Visit this link for more information about these programs.
