DISTRICT 112 MISSION STATEMENT
To nurture every child as an individual;
To empower every child as a learner;
To inspire every child to become a contributing member of our
community.
DISTRICT 112 MIDDLE SCHOOL STATEMENT
We believe in providing a safe and caring developmental environment where all
students can learn. District 112 middle schools foster the emotional, social, and
academic growth of each child and place emphasis on communication among all
members of the school community. The voice of the student is heard and reflected in student-centered activities that nurture a balance between academic and extracurricular responsibilities.
We value individual and organizational excellence, diversity, and a collaborative process for continuous growth. Middle school education is distinctive because it bridges childhood to young adulthood. Through unique programs and opportunities, we develop critical thinking and encourage healthy choices toward greater independence and responsibility.
EDGEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL VISION AND VALUES STATEMENTS
Our Vision: Edgewood Middle School will set the premium standard for excellence in middle school education by ensuring high levels of cognitive, social, and emotional growth for all students. We will be recognized as an exemplary 21st century school community in which educators work collaboratively to produce and celebrate optimal student and teacher performance.
Our Values:
We Will create and maintain a safe and nurturing student-centered learning
environment.
We Will collaborate professionally on a regular basis to meet the needs of our students.
We Will model and encourage six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect,
responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
We Will incorporate 21st century technologies into our lessons to enhance meaningful learning.
We Will plan and implement engaging and relevant lessons which inspire students to contribute to society as global citizens.
Our Motto: Learning Today…Leading Tomorrow
ADVISORY TEACHERS
District 112 middle school students are assigned an Advisory teacher to meet with on a daily basis from sixth through eighth grade. The first nine minutes of our school day are reserved for students to meet with this adult advocate and a group of grade level peers. Several times each year, students participate in service learning or character building projects within an extended Advisory period. This model provides ongoing advocacy and support for students throughout their middle school experience.
SOCIAL WORKERS
The primary responsibility of our social workers is to assist students with concerns related to school. Social workers loop with students from sixth through eighth grade to provide ongoing and focused support. These staff members contact students early in the school year to explain their services and how students may access them. Students are encouraged to ask questions and seek assistance from this team.
CONTACTING STAFF MEMBERS
All staff members are available by both phone and email. To access a staff member‘s voicemail box, please call (847) 432-3858 and an office staff member will assist you. After school hours, dial extension 555 to access our voicemail box directory. For more information on contacting our staff, please visit our website at www.nssd112.org/edgewood.
ATTENDANCE
Bell
Schedule
Students are expected to maintain consistent attendance during our school year. School hours are from 7:55 a.m. - 2:40 p.m. each day.
- Parents are asked to call our school office at (847) 432-3858 ext.190 before 8:00 a.m. to report a student absence and provide a reason for the absence. If we do not receive notification of an absence, our school contacts parents within the first two hours of the school day. When a parent can not be reached, we utilize emergency numbers provided on your district registration form. Please keep these emergency numbers current by notifying our office of any changes at (847) 432-3858.
- A valid student absence is one due to illness, observance of a religious holiday, death in the immediate family, family emergency, situations beyond the student’s control as determined by the building administrators or such other circumstances that cause reasonable concern to the parent or guardian for the student’s safety or health. Examples of unexcused absences include sport practice, play practice, or a trip to see the Cubs game. (Policy 7:70)
- Students absent without valid cause for 10% or more of the previous 180 regular attendance days are considered chronically truant. (Policy 7:70)
- Students arriving to school after 7:55 a.m. and present for seven or more periods are considered tardy. Detentions are issued to students with four or more tardies in a given semester.
- Students may not leave school during the regular school day without written permission from the office. Permission is granted in the case of illness, injury, medical appointments which cannot be scheduled during non-school hours, family emergencies, and individual requests granted on an as needed basis by a building administrator.
- Families anticipating an extended student absence are to complete our
Prearranged Absence Form. This form must be submitted at least one week prior to the anticipated absence.
- Parents or guardians traveling out of town are asked to call our school office at (847) 432-3858 ext. 200 in order to provide us with the name and phone number of the individual or family supervising their child.
As you know, laboratory experiences, classroom discussions, teacher demonstrations, and group work processes are not truly replicated through worksheet packets or independent reading provided when a student is absent. Consequently, removing students from school for non-emergency, non-illness related activities runs contrary to the high value we place on education while also engaging both our students and teachers in a prolonged game of “catch-up.” We therefore appreciate your cooperation in scheduling family vacations and other non-emergency events during the vacation days designated in our school calendar.
HOMEWORK / ASSIGNMENTS
Students are expected to submit assignments on the date they are due. Students
involved in field trips, music lessons, or other school-related events that result in a class absence are expected to submit assignments in advance or per teacher discretion. Students absent from school for any reason are expected to contact individual teachers in order to schedule revised due dates for all missed assignments, as well as revised assessment dates for any missed quizzes or tests. This contact is to be initiated by the student upon his/her return to school. Please see the appropriate grade level team homework policy for additional information regarding the completion of both daily and long-term assignments.
- Homework/Classwork assignments may be available by accessing teacher web pages and/or by emailing or phoning individual teachers.
- Our Power School Parent Information System is another tool available to students and parents. This system provides parents with 24 hour online access to student attendance, assignments, and grades through the use of individual password codes distributed at the beginning of each school year.
- Parents may call our main office to initiate a Homework Request if a child has been absent from school two or more days. Parents calling with homework requests before 9:00 a.m. may pick up homework at the end of that school day. Please note teachers are not always able to provide students with work, as classroom instruction and discussion are not replicated through homework packets. For students missing one day, parents and/or students should simply email individual teachers to receive assignments.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Our goal is to provide a safe, orderly and respectful learning environment in which all of our students may achieve success. Students must ride their assigned bus to and from school. Students may not ride a different bus home from school to visit friends, attend lessons or sports practice, etc. Riding the bus is a privilege, not a right. This privilege is revoked if student conduct is in violation of expectations. (Policy 7:220)

- STAFF
- Staff members are responsible for establishing and
communicating expectations of appropriate student conduct.
- Staff members may take these and other actions when disciplining students: review rules and expectations, provide warnings, use verbal or nonverbal redirection, remove the student from the classroom, conference with the student, contact parents, assign detention(s), submit a disciplinary referral to the administration.

Parents may appeal disciplinary action in accordance with Board Policy.
- Consequences are determined by the following: the nature and severity of the offense, the student’s history within the given school year, and any special education issues which may apply. Grounds for disciplinary action apply when the student’s conduct is reasonably related to school or school activities including on school grounds before, during, or after school hours or at a school-sponsored event. (Policy 7:190)
- SEARCHES AND SEIZURES
For the safety and supervision of students, to maintain discipline and order in
schools, and to provide for the health, safety and welfare of students and staff,
school authorities are authorized to conduct searches of students and their
personal effects, as well as District 112 property. Certified employees and school
administrators may search a student and/or the student’s personal effects
(purses, wallets, knapsacks, book bags, lunch boxes, etc.) when there are
reasonable grounds for suspecting that the search will produce evidence the
particular student has violated or is violating either the law or the District’s
student conduct rules. The search itself must be conducted in a manner which is
reasonably related to its objectives and not excessively intrusive in light of the
age and sex of the student and the nature of the suspected infraction. (105 ILCS 5/10-20.14, 5/10-22.6, and 5/10-22.10a.)
- SUSPENSION/EXPULSION
Students committing acts of disobedience or misconduct may be suspended from
school, suspended from riding the bus, reported to juvenile authorities, expelled
from school, or otherwise disciplined. A student may be immediately suspended
when the student’s presence poses a continuing danger to persons or property
or an ongoing threat of disruption to the educational process. District 112 schools
follow suspension and expulsion procedures outlined in our Board Policy and
comply with all local, state, and federal laws regarding tobacco, alcohol, illegal
drugs and controlled substances, prescription drugs, look-alike or counterfeit drugs, drug paraphernalia, weapons, and look-alike weapons. (Policy 7:190)

The uniform is available for purchase from our physical education teachers. Students may participate in outdoor activities and are therefore required to bring sweatshirts and sweatpants. Combination locks are required to secure assigned lockers. Each student is responsible for his/her personal belongings.

with physical education teachers are valid for up to three
days in length. After three days, the school nurse
must receive a doctor’s note excusing a student from

The IMC is open each school day to check out materials. Students may check out books, magazines, and vertical file information for two weeks. Items may be renewed if they are not on the “waiting list” or the “reserve list.” A fine is assessed for overdue materials. Any lost item requires a replacement cost. Reference materials, reserved materials, and audiovisual materials may only be checked out overnight. Overdue items result in a loss of student privileges, such as receiving a yearbook at the end of the year. IMC sponsored activities include: Edge Cafe, Book Fair, and Visiting Author.
LUNCH
The PTO sponsors food days throughout the school year. To participate, students must register online prior to the beginning of the school year and again at mid year. Milk may be ordered during the student registration process, and vending machines are also available for student use.
ACADEMIC LUNCH PROGRAM (ALP) and LUNCH STUDY HALL
Students who do not complete class assignments will be required to attend Academic Lunch Program (ALP) in an assigned classroom in lieu of eating in the lunchroom. Students in ALP are expected to work silently and complete any and all missed assignments. Details will be provided by grade level teachers. In addition, students wishing to eat lunch while reading and/or studying in a quiet place may report to the grade level Lunch Study Hall classroom. Seats are limited to 25 and students are expected to eat and study quietly.
TRANSPORTATION
Bus transportation is provided at no cost to families living 1 1/2 miles or more from school. Bus transportation is provided for a fee to families living closer to school. Buses are boarded immediately following dismissal, and depart from school at approximately 2:50 p.m. each day. An activity bus, which departs at 4:00 p.m. is available to transport students staying after school for activities, events, detention, etc.
EARLY ARRIVAL
Our school doors open at 7:20 a.m. each school day. Students must present a pass signed by a teacher or parent in order to meet with a teacher at this time. The pass must include the student’s name, the name of the teacher he or she is planning to meet, and the date.

LOST AND FOUND
Valuable items should not be brought to school. A lost and found bin is available for students to drop items found in and around the building. If the found item is delicate or costly (jewelry, eye glasses, calculators, etc.) students are asked to bring the item directly to the office. Students who have lost personal items are encouraged to check in the lost and found bin as well as the office.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Edgewood Middle School supports many extracurricular opportunities for students. Students involved in extracurricular activities are subject to the practices outlined in this handbook. In order to accommodate student interest in these activities, late buses run five days a week and leave school at approximately 4:00 p.m.

TEAM SPORTS
District 112 athletic teams participate in Lakeside Conference competitive play.
Edgewood Middle School hosts six Lakeside Conference teams: Cross Country,
Soccer, Girl’s Volleyball, Girl’s Basketball, Boy’s Basketball, and Boy’s Volleyball.
Student athletes must try out for these teams, maintain an average of 70% or higher in each of their classes, behave appropriately in all school-related activities, attend all practices, be in school attendance for the full day of sporting events, and meet additional athletic code expectations in order to participate. If a student is excused from physical education class, he or she may not participate in any extracurricular activity that requires physical movement or dance for the duration of the excuse. Spirit Squad participants are subject to all athletic standards, and Spirit Squad teams are expected to support student athletic teams regardless of gender. Please see the Edgewood Middle School Athletic Code Handbook for details regarding our Lakeside Conference athletic teams. (Activities vary from year to year)
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC SCHOOL POLICY
Edgewood offers muscial experiences for their students during their time in
middle school. Band and Orchestra impact almost all class teachers, as students are pulled from academic classes on a rotating schedule in order to participate in lessons. Band and Orchestra teachers are asked to hand out a lesson schedule in advance and to do their best not to have students miss particular classes more than others. It is the responsibility of the student to make up any tests, projects, or other work that was missed due to the lesson, and it is the student’s responsibility to inform the classroom teacher of the lesson before the lesson is scheduled to take place. Staff are asked to work cooperatively with each other in the best interests of their students as not place them in the position of having to choose between music and classes. Students must have permission from the Band and Orchestra teacher in order to miss a lesson. Please
understand that individual and group lessons are very important and necessary for the overall success of our Band and Orchestra programs. It is very difficult to make up missed time due to the large amount of lessons being taught during a given period within the schedule.
REPORT CARDS
The school year is divided into four grading quarters. Report cards are provided at the end of each quarter. Our Power School Parent Information System provides families with 24 hour online access to student attendance, assignments, and grades through the use of an individual username and password distributed at the beginning of each school year. Student-Led Conferences are scheduled in the fall and spring. Teachers and parents may request additional meetings throughout the school year.
PICTURES AND YEARBOOK
Student photographs are taken by a professional service. Students and parents are provided the opportunity to purchase a variety of picture sets. One photo will appear in the yearbook, which is distributed at the end of our school year. Activity pictures and 8th grade graduation photographs are taken separately in addition to yearbook photos.
VISITORS
All visitors must enter through the main entrance at the upper circle drive and sign in and out of the office. Visitors must wear badges. Student visitors are welcomed after 2:40 p.m. and must check into the office and follow all student behavior expectations.
FIRE, TORNADO, AND LOCK DOWN DRILLS
Practicing evacuation procedures in case of a fire or
other disaster is a necessary component of our school
operation. Students
and staff are expected to place a high priority on the
orderly and effective evacuation of the school during practice
drills. When an announcement is made or an emergency alarm
sounds, students and staff must evacuate the building via
the prescribed procedures and route. Students are
to remain in line and reenter the building when the “all-clear” is
given. The Edgewood Middle School Crisis Team is
trained to facilitate parent contacts in emergencies. In
the case of a building evacuation, students are taken to
Northmoor Country Club.

EMERGENCY DRILLS
Practicing evacuation procedures in case of a fire or other disaster is a necessary component of our school operation. We regularly practice safety drills to ensure safety in the event of an emergency. During these drills, all students, staff, and visitors must participate fully.
EMERGENCY DAYS / INCLEMENT WEATHER
Students remain outside of the building prior to 7:48 a.m., at which time our first bell rings and students enter the building. In inclement weather, students may enter the building before that time. Sixth and seventh graders report to our cafeteria, and eighth grade students report to the auditorium to wait for the first bell. Advisory begins promptly at 7:55 a.m. Late starts or school closings are announced on local news stations and/or through a district-wide alert message system, Connect Ed. The North Shore District 112 website (www.nssd112.org) may also have emergency information available. Decisions to close schools due to inclement weather are made by our Superintendent as early as possible.
DISTRICT COMPUTER NETWORK AND INTERNET ACCESS
The district policy for computer network and internet use is included in this
handbook. Please review this information with your child.
STUDENT MEDICATION
Students should not take medication during school hours or during school-related activities unless it is necessary for a student’s health and well-being. When a student’s licensed health care provider and parent(s)/guardian(s) believe that it is necessary for the student to take a medication during school hours, they must request that the school dispense to or supervise the self-administration of the medication by the student and otherwise follow the District's procedures on dispensing medication. Forms for medication authorization and self-administration are available on the district website or with the school nurse. Illinois School Code Sections 10.22 and 10.23 NSSD112 School Board policy 7:270 and 7:270R.
VISION SCREENING
Vision screening will be done during the school year, as mandated, for children in the following grades/circumstances: Preschool, Kindergarten, Second Grade, Eighth Grade, Special Education, Teacher Referrals, Transfer Students. Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an examination has been administered within the previous 12 months and that evaluation is on file at the school. This notice is not a permission to test and is not required to be returned.
CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
All contagious diseases must be reported to the nurse AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
We are required to report certain communicable diseases to the Lake County Health Department. To ensure compliance with this mandate, we ask that you call the school if your child has been diagnosed with any of the following: Chicken Pox, Conjunctivitis (pink eye), Encephalitis, Fifths Disease, German Measles, Head Lice, Hepatitis, A, B or C, Pin Worms, Meningitis, Mumps, Red Measles, Scabies, Strep infections, Tuberculosis, Food-borne illnesses such as campylobacter, e-coli, or salmonella.
HEALTH EXAMINATIONS AND IMMUNIZATIONS
All children entering preschool, kindergarten or sixth grade and students newly enrolled in District 112 are required by law to have a complete health examination by a licensed physician within one year before they begin school. Immunizations against communicable diseases are required by the Illinois department of Public Health and are strictly enforced. North Shore District 112 School Board policy now requires that this information be presented to the nurse before the first day of school.
EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
No student shall, on the basis of his or her sex, sexual orientaion, race, color, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, language barrier, religious beliefs or religious affiliation, physical, mental handicap or disability, services or benefits, or be limited in the exercise of any right, privilege, advantage or opportunity. Any student may file a discrimination grievance by using the Uniform Grievance Procedure. (Policy 7:10)
FREE APPROPRIATE PUBLIC EDUCATION
Section 504 prohibits discrimination against disabled persons, including both students and staff members, by school districts receiving federal financial assistance. Included in the U.S. Department of Education regulations for Section 504 is the requirement that disabled students be provided with free appropriate public education (FAPE). These regulations require identification, evaluation, the provision of appropriate services, and procedural safeguards. (105 ILCS 5/14-8.02; 105 ILCS 5/14-6.0 1)
IMMUNIZATIONS AND PHYSICALS
Physicals are required for kindergarten and fifth graders
and for those participating in sports or Spirit Squad. Incoming
sixth grade health records will be checked for current
immunizations; most commonly the hepatitis series needs
to be completed. (105 ILCS 5/27-8.1)
SEX EQUITY
The Board shall evaluate its policies and practices to identify any sex discrimination. The evaluation shall include an examination of course enrollment data to identify any instances of disproportionate enrollment on the basis of sex. If the evaluation identifies any sex discrimination, the Board shall develop a written sex equity plan which modifies any policy or practice as necessary to conform to the District’s responsibilities under this policy and which contains remedial steps to eliminate the effects of the discrimination. The Superintendent shall provide inservice training for implementing any such sex equity plan to school district administrators, certificated and non certified personnel as needed. (Title IX of the Educational Amendments, 20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq,; 105 ILCS 5/27-1; 23 IAC §§ 1.240, 200.40(d))
STUDENT RECORDS
Policies must be communicated to all students and parents. Upon transfer or enrollment to a school, a school is required to give notice of parent/student rights under the Illinois School Student Records Act. (105 ILCS 10/1 et seq., 23 IAC §§ 1.240, 226.135,375.30)
WAIVER OF FEES
Generally school fees must be paid in advance for each school term at the time of initial registration or initial enrollment. However, the school district shall waive fees assessed by the district for students whose parent(s) or guardian(s) are unable to afford them. The Superintendent shall establish procedures to supplement this policy where appropriate and for submitting fee waiver requests. (105 ILCS 5/10-20.13;23 IAC §1.245)
