We believe in providing a safe and caring developmental environment
where all students can learn. District 112 middle schools foster
the emotional, social, and academic growth of each child and
place emphasis on communication among all members of the school
community. The voice of the student is heard and reflected
in student-centered activities that nurture a balance between
academic and extracurricular responsibilities.
We value individual and organizational excellence, diversity, and a collaborative
process for continuous growth.
Middle school education is distinctive because it bridges childhood
to young adulthood. Through unique programs and opportunities,
we develop critical thinking and encourage healthy choices toward
greater independence and responsibility.
District 112 middle school students are assigned an Advisory
teacher to meet with on a daily basis from sixth through eighth
grade. The first nine minutes of our school day are reserved
for students to meet with this adult advocate and a group of
grade level peers. Several times each year,
students participate in service learning or character building
projects within an extended Advisory period. This model provides
ongoing advocacy and support for students throughout their
middle school experience.
The primary responsibility of our social workers is to assist
students with concerns related to school. Social workers
loop with students from sixth through eighth grade to provide
ongoing and focused support. These staff members contact students
early in the school year to explain their services and how
students may access them. Students are encouraged to ask questions
and seek assistance from this team.
All staff members are available by both phone and email. To
access a staff member’s voicemail box, please call (847)
432-3858 and an office staff member will assist you. After
school hours, dial extension 555 to access our voicemail box
directory. Please visit our website at www.nssd112.org/edgewood
for a complete email address and voicemail extension list.
Our goal is to provide a safe, orderly and respectful learning
environment in which all of our students may achieve success.
Specific expectations for appropriate student behavior are
as follows:
Report to school and class
on time (see Attendance). Tardiness to class is cause for
disciplinary action.
Demonstrate respect, courtesy and good manners at all times
to peers, staff members and others. The use of profanity or
abusive language toward others, physical contact for pain or
pleasure, and any form of harassment is subject to disciplinary
action.
Demonstrate good judgment in clothing. Clothing that distracts
from the learning environment is not appropriate. Midriffs,
cleavage, and undergarments may not be exposed. Tank straps
are expected to be at least two inches wide with a reasonable
underarm cut that does not expose torso or chest. Skirts
and shorts must reach the end of a student’s pinky
finger when his/her arm is extended, and pants or shorts
must be worn at the waist. Students are not allowed to wear
hats in school, except on spirit days. Clothing with inappropriate
advertisements, slogans, or pictures (including tobacco,
drugs, alcohol, sexual references or connotations, and inappropriate
language) is not acceptable. Infractions result in a parent
contact to secure a change of clothes, or the student will
wear his or her PE uniform for the remainder of the school
day. Students will remain in the office until a change of
clothes is secured. Infractions are subject to disciplinary
action.
- SCHOOL PROPERTY AND THE PROPERTY OF OTHERS
Students are expected to care for school property and the
property of others. School property includes but is
not limited to: furniture, walls, windows, doors, floors,
sidewalks, lockers, benches, and equipment. Students may
not damage property with pens, pencils, paint or other instruments. Students
may not tamper with fire alarms, fire extinguishers, or any
electrical systems. Textbooks are the property of the school
and fines are assessed for unreturned or damaged books. Students
may not damage or take the personal property of others. If
items are found, students are expected to take these items
to the lost and found or to the main office. Damaging or
taking ownership of school property or the property of others
is subject to disciplinary action.
- SPECIFIC ITEMS NOT ALLOWED AT SCHOOL
Bring to school only those items that are appropriate for
one’s education. Inappropriate and/or dangerous
items are confiscated and returned to parents upon request. Specific
items not allowed at school include: fireworks, stink bombs,
noise makers, knives (including pocket knives), laser pointers,
matches, lighters, tape recorders, beepers, palm pilots,
televisions, etc. Radios, cassette/CD players, iPods, cell
phones (turned off), skateboards, and roller blades are to
be stored in student lockers during the school day. Infractions
are subject to disciplinary action. (105 ILCS 5/10-20.2 8;105
ILCS 5/10-21.10)
Each student at Edgewood Middle School is assigned two lockers:
a hallway locker and a physical education locker. Students
are required to use locks and provide lock combinations to
their Advisory teacher and PE/W teacher. Students are
expected to lock their lockers after each use and refrain
from sharing locker combinations with their peers. Students
may not share or change lockers without permission. Students
may not decorate a peer’s locker. Students are expected
to demonstrate proper behavior when using school lockers.
Back-locking, kicking, slamming, and opening other students’ lockers
for any reason are not permitted. Students are expected to
demonstrate respect and patience with other students when
getting in or out of their locker space. All lockers are
the property of Edgewood Middle School. Infractions are subject
to disciplinary action.
Demonstrate good judgment and courtesy while eating in the
cafeteria. In order to ensure a safe cafeteria environment,
students arrive to lunch on time and remain seated at tables
(of no more than sixteen students) unless they are disposing
of trash or purchasing food. Students are expected to remain
quiet and attentive during lunchtime announcements, and not
carry any food items out of the cafeteria. Students are expected
to maintain the cleanliness of the cafeteria. Each table
is assigned one “sweeper” and one “topper” by
a lunch supervisor to clean the table and surrounding area.
Sponges, brooms and other cleaning utensils are available
for student use. Students demonstrating appropriate behavior
are dismissed for lunch activities. Students are expected
to stay away from cars in our parking lot and nearby street,
and to refrain from physical contact. Students visiting teachers
or the IMC during lunch periods must have an IMC or teacher
pass. Lunchtime infractions are subject to disciplinary action.
Demonstrate good judgment and courtesy when using our hallways.
Running, shouting, and pushing are not permitted. All students
must have a pass when moving throughout the building. When
transitioning from class to class, each student is expected
to walk (not run), remain quiet, and demonstrate respect
when stopping to talk with friends or teachers. Infractions
are subject to disciplinary action.
All passengers are expected to conduct themselves in a manner
consistent with classroom and/or other school-related expectations.
The bus driver is responsible for the safety of students
on the bus. He or she must receive cooperation from all passengers.
Inappropriate behavior that is distracting, disruptive,
or may cause potential injury to students, staff or others
is subject to disciplinary action. Students must ride their
assigned bus to and from school. Students may not ride a
different bus home from school to visit friends, attend lessons
or sports practice, etc. Riding the bus is a privilege, not
a right. This privilege is revoked if student conduct is
in violation of expectations. (Policy 4:110R)
Demonstrate good judgment and courtesy while attending assembly
programs. Students enter quietly, sit with their classmates
and teacher, and are expected to remain quiet throughout
the program. Students may show their appreciation by cheering
and clapping at appropriate times. Unacceptable behaviors
include booing, hooting, yelling, throwing items, and distracting
others. At the conclusion of the assembly, students wait
quietly for dismissal instructions. Inappropriate behavior
is subject to removal from the assembly and/or disciplinary
action.
- TELEPHONES AND CELL PHONES
Students may bring a cell phone to school for emergency
use only. All phones must be turned off during the
school day, and stored in a locked locker. Students
may use their cell phones before or after school hours to
ensure communication with family members. School phones
are not for student use, unless permission is granted for
special circumstances. Infractions are subject to disciplinary
action.
Refrain from gang activities including hand gestures, symbols,
and the flagging of colors. These and other behaviors are
subject to disciplinary action.
Student dress on Halloween is subject to our student dress
code. Masks, weapons, and look-alike weapons are not allowed.
Please apply hair dye or face paint at home. Costumes are
not allowed on alternate days unless directed by a teacher
for lesson activities. Infractions are subject to disciplinary
action.
Gum chewing is not allowed at Edgewood Middle School.
DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES
Our goal is to provide a safe, orderly and respectful learning
environment in which all of our students may achieve success.
Procedures for responding to student misconduct are as
follows:
- STAFF
- Staff members are responsible for establishing and
communicating expectations of appropriate student conduct.
- Staff members may take these and other actions when
disciplining students: review rules and expectations,
provide warnings, use verbal or nonverbal redirection,
remove the student from the classroom, conference with
the student, contact parents, assign detention(s), submit
a disciplinary referral to the administration.
- A disciplinary referral is submitted by staff members
for student misconduct that is repetitive or significantly
disruptive. The discipline referral is a legal document.
Parents receive a copy of the discipline referral and
other appropriate information as warranted.
- ADMINISTRATION
- Administrators may take these and other actions when
disciplining students: conference with student and/or
parents, withhold privileges, facilitate a mediation,
develop a contract or behavior management plan, contact
parent, assign detention(s), assign a service project,
notify juvenile authorities, assign a written project,
assign extended afternoon or Saturday detention(s),
assign an in or out of school suspension, bus suspension,
and/or a suspension from school activities (see Suspension/
Expulsion). Parents may appeal disciplinary action
in accordance with Board Policy.
- Consequences are determined by the following: the
nature and severity of the offense, the student’s history
within the given school year, and any special education
issues which may apply. Grounds for disciplinary action
apply when the student’s conduct is reasonably
related to school or school activities including on
school grounds before, during, or after school hours
or at a school-sponsored event. (Policy 7:190)
- SEARCHES AND SEIZURES
For the safety and supervision of students, to maintain
discipline and order in schools, and to provide for the health,
safety and welfare of students and staff, school authorities
are authorized to conduct searches of students and their
personal effects, as well as District 112 property. Certified
employees and school administrators may search a student
and/or the student’s personal effects (purses, wallets,
knapsacks, book bags, lunch boxes, etc.) when there are reasonable
grounds for suspecting that the search will produce evidence
the particular student has violated or is violating either
the law or the District’s student conduct rules. The
search itself must be conducted in a manner which is reasonably
related to its objectives and not excessively intrusive in
light of the age and sex of the student and the nature of
the suspected infraction. (105 ILCS 5/10-20.14, 5/10-22.6,
and 5/10-22.10a.)
Students committing acts of disobedience or misconduct may
be suspended from school, suspended from riding the bus,
reported to juvenile authorities, expelled from school, or
otherwise disciplined. A student may be immediately suspended
when the student’s presence poses a continuing danger
to persons or property or an ongoing threat of disruption
to the educational process. District 112 schools follow suspension
and expulsion procedures outlined in our Board Policy and
comply with all local, state, and federal laws regarding
tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs and controlled substances,
perscription drugs, look-alike or counterfeit drugs, drug
papraphernalia, weapons, and look-alike weapons. (Policy
7:190)
PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND WELLNESS
All students are required to dress for physical education
class on a daily basis. The complete uniform consists
of athletic shoes, socks, and the Edgewood uniform shorts
and t-shirt. The uniform is available for purchase
from our physical education teachers. Students may
participate in outdoor activities and are therefore required
to bring sweatshirts and sweatpants. Combination locks
are required to secure assigned lockers. Each student
is responsible for his/her personal belongings.
- Physical Education Medical Excuses: Parent notes shared
with physical education teachers are valid for up to three
days in length. After three days, the school nurse
must receive a doctor’s note excusing a student from
class or describing activity modifications. If a student
is excused from physical education class, he/she may not
participate in any extracurricular activity that requires
physical movement or dance for the duration of the parent
or doctor note.
- Class Attire
- Athletic shoes (non-marking, no platform, slip-on,
or skater shoes)
- Uniform shirt, uniform shorts, socks
- Hand towel, deodorant (no spray) and container for
jewelry
- Sweatshirt and sweatpants (no buttons, zippers or snaps,
and pants must not be lower than the ankle in length)
- Physical Education & Wellness Safety
- No jewelry (except studded earrings and medical alert
information)
- No gum, food, or drinks (except water in plastic bottles)
- Combination lock
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
CENTER
The IMC is open each school day to check out materials. Students
may check out books, magazines, and vertical file information
for two weeks. Items may be renewed if they are not on the “waiting
list” or the “reserve list.” A fine
is assessed for overdue materials. Any lost item requires
a replacement cost. Reference materials, reserved materials,
and audiovisual materials may only be checked out overnight. Overdue
items result in a loss of student privileges, such as receiving
a yearbook at the end of the year. IMC sponsored activities
include: Edge Cafe, Book Fair, and Visiting Author.
LUNCH
The PTO sponsors food days throughout the school year.
To participate, students must register online prior
to the beginning of the school year and again at mid
year. Milk
may be ordered during the student registration process,
and vending machines are also available for student use.
TRANSPORTATION
Bus transportation is provided at no cost to families living
1 1/2 miles or more from school. Bus transportation is
provided for a fee to families living closer to school.
Buses are boarded immediately following dismissal, and depart
from school at approximately 2:50 p.m. each day.
EARLY ARRIVAL
Our school doors open at 7:20 a.m. each school day. Students
must present a pass signed by a teacher or parent in order
to meet with a teacher at this time. The pass must include
the student’s name, the name of the teacher he or
she is planning to meet, and the date.
FIELD TRIPS
Signed parent consent is necessary for student participation
on all field trips. Parents are notified of the location,
departure and return times. All school rules are in effect
during field trips and other off-campus events.
LOST AND FOUND
Valuable items should not be brought to school. A lost and
found bin is available for students to drop items found
in and around the building. If the found item is delicate
or costly (jewelry, eye glasses, calculators, etc.) students
are asked to bring the item directly to the office. Students
who have lost personal items are encouraged to check in
the lost and found bin as well as the office.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Edgewood Middle School supports many extracurricular
opportunities for students. Students involved in extracurricular
activities are subject to the practices outlined in
this Handbook. In order to accommodate student interest
in these activities, late buses run five days a week
and leave school at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Conference teams: Cross Country, Soccer, Girl’s Volleyball,
Girl’s Basketball, Boy’s Basketball, and Boy’s
Volleyball. Student athletes must try out for these teams,
maintain an average of 70% or higher in each of their classes,
behave appropriately in all school-related activities,
attend all practices, be in school attendance for the full
day of sporting events, and meet additional athletic code
expectations in order to participate. If a student is excused
from physical education class, he or she may not participate
in any extracurricular activity that requires physical
movement or dance for the duration of the excuse. Spirit
Squad participants are subject to all athletic standards,
and Spirit Squad teams are expected to support student
athletic teams regardless of gender. Please see the Edgewood
Middle School Athletic Code Handbook for details regarding
our Lakeside Conference athletic teams. (Activities vary
from year to year.)
REPORT CARDS
The school year is divided into four grading quarters.
Report cards are provided at the end of each quarter. Our
Power School Parent Information System provides families
with 24 hour online access to student attendance, assignments,
and grades through the use of individual usernames and
passwords distributed at the beginning of each school year.
Student-Led Conferences are scheduled in the fall and spring.
Teachers and parents may request additional meetings throughout
the school year.
PICTURES AND YEARBOOK
Student photographs are taken by a professional service.
Students and parents are provided the opportunity to purchase
a variety of picture sets. One photo will appear
in the yearbook, which is distributed at the end of our
school year.
VISITORS
All visitors must enter through the main entrance at
the upper circle drive and sign in and out of the office.
Visitors must wear badges. Student visitors must be arranged
through the office at least one day in advance. Student
visitors are expected to follow our visiting student guidelines.
FIRE, TORNADO, AND LOCK DOWN DRILLS
Practicing evacuation procedures in case of a fire or
other disaster is a necessary component of our school
operation. Students
and staff are expected to place a high priority on the
orderly and effective evacuation of the school during practice
drills. When an announcement is made or an emergency alarm
sounds, students and staff must evacuate the building via
the prescribed procedures and route. Students are
to remain in line and reenter the building when the “all-clear” is
given. The Edgewood Middle School Crisis Team is
trained to facilitate parent contacts in emergencies. In
the case of a building evacuation, students are taken to
Northmoor Country Club.

EMERGENCY DAYS / INCLEMENT WEATHER
Students remain outside of the building prior to 7:48 a.m.,
at which time our first bell rings and students enter the
building. In inclement weather, students may enter the
building before that time. Sixth and seventh graders report
to our cafeteria, and eighth grade students report to the
auditorium to wait for the first bell. Advisory begins
promptly at 7:55 a.m. Late starts or school closings are
announced on WGN, WMAQ, WLS, and WGN Channel 9 TV. Our
PTO utilizes a phone tree to contact families with this
important information, and families may also call our office
at (847) 432-3858 or our district office at (847) 681-6700
for an updated voicemail message regarding the status of
school. The North Shore District 112 website (www.nssd112.org)
may also have emergency information available. Decisions
to close schools due to inclement weather are made by our
Superintendent as early as possible.
DISTRICT COMPUTER NETWORK AND INTERNET ACCESS
The district policy for computer network and internet
use is posted on our district website.
STUDENT MEDICATION
The Board of Education hereby states its intention to
comply with the laws of Illinois concerning the administration
of student medication and treatment of student medical
emergencies. Students will not be permitted to take medication
while at school unless such medicine is administered
to them by the certified school nurse, registered nurse,
or certificated staff member or unless students self
administer such medicine under the supervision of a certified
staff member or other designated school personnel acting
under the supervision of the certified school nurse or
registered nurse. A specific written request by the parent or
guardian, along with written instructions of the student’s
physician, are required before any medication will be administered.
All medications (including over the counter medications)
require a doctor’s order and a parental consent form
on file in order for the nurse to dispense them. Forms
are available in the summer registration packet or can
be picked up in the nurse’s office throughout the
school year. Students who use inhalers may carry them on
themselves if they have appropriate paperwork on file. See
the nurse to discuss additional paperwork. (105 ILCS
5/10-20.14b, 5/10 22.21b)
VISION SCREENING
Vision screening will be done during the school year, as
mandated, for children in the following grades/circumstances:
Preschool, Kindergarten, Second Grade, Eighth Grade, Special
Education, Teacher Referrals, Transfer Students. Vision
screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision
evaluation by an eye doctor. You child is not required
to undergo this vision screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist
has completed and signed a report form indicating that
an examination has been administered within the previous
12 months and that evaluation is on file at the school.
This notice is not a permission to test and is not required
to be returned. Vision screening is not an option. If a
vision examination report is not on file at the school
for your child, your child in the mandated age/grade/group
will be screened. (Illinois Department of Public Health
Vision/Hearing Program, December 2003)
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Please report a diagnosis of any of the following to
the health office as soon as possible: E coli, Hepatitis
A, B, or C, Measles, Mumps, Chickenpox, Lyme Disease,
Meningitis, Rabies (including potential exposure), Strep
Group A, and Tetanus. Students are sent home with a temperature
of 100 degrees or higher. Please keep your child
home for 24 hours after he/she is free of fever. (105
ILCS 5/10-21.11)
EQUAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
No student shall, on the basis of his or her sex, race,
color, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, language,
religious beliefs or religious affiliation, physical and
mental handicap or disability, economic and social conditions,
or actual or potential marital or parental status be denied
equal access to programs, activities, services or benefits,
or be limited in the exercise of any right, privilege,
advantage or opportunity. Any student may file a discrimination
grievance by using the Uniform Grievance Procedure. (105
ILCS 5/10-22.5; 23 IAC § 1.240; 105 ILCS 5/22-22;
105 ILCS 5/27-1; Americans with Disabilities Act, 42 U.S.C. § 12102)
FREE APPROPRIATE PUBLIC EDUCATION
Section 504 prohibits discrimination against disabled
persons, including both students and staff members,
by school districts receiving federal financial assistance. Included
in the U.S. Department of Education regulations for Section
504 is the requirement that disabled students be provided
with free appropriate public education (FAPE). These
regulations require identification, evaluation, the provision
of appropriate services, and procedural safeguards. (105
ILCS 5/14-8.02; 105 ILCS 5/14-6.0 1)
IMMUNIZATIONS AND PHYSICALS
Physicals are required for kindergarten and fifth graders
and for those participating in sports or Spirit Squad. Incoming
sixth grade health records will be checked for current
immunizations; most commonly the hepatitis series needs
to be completed. (105 ILCS 5/27-8.1)
SEX EQUITY
The Board shall evaluate its policies and practices to
identify any sex discrimination. The evaluation shall include
an examination of course enrollment data to identify any
instances of disproportionate enrollment on the basis of
sex. If the evaluation identifies any sex discrimination,
the Board shall develop a written sex equity plan which
modifies any policy or practice as necessary to conform
to the District’s responsibilities under this policy
and which contains remedial steps to eliminate the effects
of the discrimination. The Superintendent shall provide
inservice training for implementing any such sex equity
plan to school district administrators, certificated and
non certified personnel as needed. (Title IX of the Educational
Amendments, 20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq,; 105 ILCS 5/27-1;
23 IAC §§ 1.240, 200.40(d))
STUDENT RECORDS
Policies must be communicated to all students and parents.
Upon transfer or enrollment to a school, a school is required
to give notice of parent/student rights under the Illinois
School Student Records Act. (105 ILCS 10/1 et
seq., 23 IAC §§ 1.240, 226.135,375.30)
WAIVER OF FEES
Generally school fees must be paid in advance for each
school term at the time of initial registration or initial
enrollment. However,
the school district shall waive fees assessed by the district
for students whose parent(s) or guardian(s) are unable
to afford them. The Superintendent shall establish
procedures to supplement this policy where appropriate
and for submitting fee waiver requests. (105 ILCS 5/10-20.13;23
IAC § 1.245)
