Elm Place Middle School's Policies & Procedures  

Absences If your child must be absent from school call the school nurse's office at 432-8490 by 9:00 am. If your child must leave school for an appointment, please call the office or send a note with your child. Students leaving or returning to the building must sign the log located in the office .
Assignments

Teacher assignments can be reviewed by calling the homework hot line. Dial 432-9217 to access assignments for your student's grade level.

Additionally, many of our teachers post their homework online under the Staff Directory Page.

Advisory/Homebase Students stay with their advisory group for their three years at Elm Place. Two days a week, there are teacher directed activities during Advisory period. The other three days are used for individual conferences with students, organization and quiet study. The advisory teacher is available to assist you and your child with any questions you may have about the school.
Bicycles / Skates / Skateboards Bicycles must be parked and locked in the racks provided. Skates must be removed when on school grounds. Bicyclists and skaters must wear helmets. Skateboards are not permitted on school grounds. The school is not responsible for damage or theft of bicycles or skates brought to school.
Bus Bus services is provided for students who live more than 1.5 miles from the school. Guests are permitted on buses only with written permission from their parents and with the approval of the principal or his designee.
Computer Usage Students have access to computers throughout the school. Students and parents are required to sign and a computer Acceptable Use Policy. School computers are to be used for school assignments only. Misuse of computer hardware or inappropriate usage can result in the revocation of computer privileges.
Dress Code Dress and grooming will be the responsibility of the student and his/her parents within the following guidelines: 1) Dress and grooming will be clean and consistent with health, sanitary, and safety requirements; 2) Dress and grooming will not be such as to disrupt the teaching/learning process.
Electronic Devices Students are discouraged from bring electronic devices such as GameBoys, radios, CD players, iPods, or PDA's to school. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged devices.
Health Concerns Parents of students with health concerns or problems should contact Penny Hoders, the school nurse, at 432-8490. If a student requires medication during the school day, the administration of the medication will be supervised by the school nurse. Parents must complete and sign the "School Medication Authorization Form" prior to any medication being administered in school. No student shall possess or consume any prescription or non-prescription medication on school grounds or at school related functions unless directly supervised by the nurse.
Homework Homework is determined by each individual teacher. On the average, teachers assign 1/2 hour to 1 hour of homework a night, depending upon subject and grade. Another way to look at homework is to expect 5-10 minutes per night multiplied by the students grade level.
Lockers Each student is assigned a locker and combination. It is the student's responsibility to keep his or her locker clean and organized. Combinations are to be kept private.
Lunch Period During a student's lunch period, he/she will have 20 minutes to eat and a 20 minute recess. Students are encouraged to bring their lunches from home as the vending machines offer a limited selection of soups, pasta, chips and juices. Milk is also available for purchase. Sack lunches are available at low cost for those families that qualify (see the office staff for details). Students, with the exception of those receiving special permission from the building principal, must stay on school grounds during the lunch period.

PE Uniforms All students are required to wear uniforms during physical education classes. Uniforms may be purchased through the PE Department during the first week of school
