Language arts consists of what was once two classes: literature (reading) and English (writing). Due to the fact that we now teach the same students in a block, we are able to base many writing assignments on the reading enhancing both parts of the language arts curriculum.

The literature side of language arts will involve reading whole class novels (Crash, Tangerine, Stargirl, The Outsiders, Esperanza Rising, etc.), independently read novels, and short stories, excerpts, poetry, nonfiction, etc. as found in the McDougal-Littell text. This text focuses on teaching students metacognitive strategies to improve their reading. These strategies are employed effortlessly by good readers but may need to be taught to blossoming readers. Students will learn to clarify, evaluate, predict, question, visualize, and connect.

The English side of language arts includes informal writing in the Lit Log, formal writing pieces that go through the writing process, informal weekly writing in the Lit Log, a new spelling program focusing on homonyms and sound alikes, grammar studies through the McDougal-Littell text, and DOL (Daily Oral Language) practice in editing. I will work to improve the quality of students' writing through practicing the six traits of good writing: sentence fluency, voice, word choice, organization, ideas, and conventions.

WE HAVE MOVED THE POETRY UNIT TO THE END OF THE YEAR.
