Liyana is 14 when her doctor father, a native Palestinian, decides to move the family back to Jerusalem. Liyana struggles with culture shock after the move to a place where she's not supposed to wear shorts or befriend Jews much less fall in love with one. The tension and violence between Palestinians and Jews seems to grow as Liyana becomes accustomed to her new home, but she will never become accustomed to the violence that affects her own family. Her grandmother's bathroom is destroyed by Israeli soldiers, and her father is imprisoned. It all seems very unfair, but so does the bomb set off in the marketplace by Palestinians to kill Jews. This fictional look at the problems in Jerusalem can be difficult to read.
