Twain's classic, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, may prove challenging for the modern middle school student but is worth the effort. The language and imagery is not what the modern reader is accustomed to and will definitely expand the horizons of those who consider themsleves strong readers. Tom has been described as the definitive American boy (of the 1800s) filled with curiosity and mischievousness. He witnesses a murder and gets lost in a cave but the story also focuses on more mundane aspects of life including painting fences, cheating at Sunday school, falling in love, and playing army with friends. Becky is an admirable love interest, Injun Joe is a formidable adversary and Tom is a rascal. Though the racism of the times may be shocking, this is a must-read for every American.
