SOME POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

Q: If I have a question about Elm Place, whom should I contact?

A: Ask your child’s home base teacher or the school office staff. The administration is always available to assist you. Please call the school at (847) 432-9217.

Q: What is the lunchroom program at Elm Place?

A: Between 11:03 a.m.-11:44 a.m. the sixth graders eat lunch and then go outside. Sixth graders eat at assigned tables by home base for the start of the school year. Seventh grade students eat from 11:47-12:28. Eighth grade students eat lunch from 12:28 p.m. until 1:12 p.m. During inclement weather (and during much of the winter) the students will report to the gym instead of going outside for recess.

The PTO offers a Hot Lunch Program. In addition, students bring lunches from home. The vending machines offer a limited selection of soups, pasta, chips, and juices. Milk is also available for purchase at the start of the school year from the school district. Students must stay on school grounds during the lunch hour.

Q: How does recess work at Elm Place?

A: All students have a 20-minute recess period during lunch.

Q: What about homework?

A: Homework is up to each individual teacher. On the average, teachers assign 1/2 hour to 1 hour of homework a night, depending upon subject and grade. Another way to look at homework is to expect 5 to 10 minutes times a student’s grade each night.

AND CONCERNS

Q: Will the younger students have much contact with the older students at Elm Place?

A: The younger students are mostly in their own section of the building. Some eighth graders volunteer to assist the teachers in working with their classes. This is part of the school’s Young Advocate Program.

Q: Do students have their own hall lockers? How do they work?

A: Each student at Elm Place has his/her own hall locker. The teacher shows the student how to operate it. Locker combinations are changed yearly.

Q: How are the students evaluated academically?

A: Students start receiving letter grades in 6th grade. Report cards are issued quarterly for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students.

Q: If my child misses an assignment, whom do I contact?

A: For your convenience, we have the “Homework Hotline” in English and Spanish, and there is a Power School Parent web site available 24 hours a day.
