How to create an outline from scratch
using Microsoft Office Word



1. In a new document, VIEW-OUTLINE

2. Go to FORMATS- BULLETS AND NUMBERING

Click OUTLINED NUMBERED (3rd tab on top)

 

3.Click on the box in the BOTTOM ROW. 3rd from LEFT

Click OK

 

4.Type each heading and press ENTER.

 

5.To put a roman numeral, an a or a number highlight the word, then click Promote or Demote on the Outlining toolbar until the heading is at the level you want.

PROMOTE AND DEMOTE are squares with arrow left and arrow right they are located in the upper left corner of your toolbar

6.To move a heading to a different location, place the insertion point in the heading, and then click Move Up or Move Down on the Outlining toolbar until the heading is moved where you want it to go. (If a heading is collapsed, the subordinate text under the heading moves with the heading.)

 

7.When you're satisfied with the organization, switch to normal view, print layout view, or Web layout view to add detailed body text and graphics.
