Girls on the Run is
an after school club for 3rd - 5th grade girls that
meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Spring. We
do running workouts and games that teach specific
life skills such as how to make healthy decisions,
resolve conflicts, and get along in a group. Our focus
is for the girls to develop a positive self image,
and have fun! The season culminates with all of the
Chicagoland Girls on the Run groups participating
in the WonderGirl 5k run. For more information please
visit www.gotrchicago.org or
contact Miss Pellerite, Miss Portelli, or Ms. Zanon! |

Book Match Is open to
any 4th or 5th grader. In Book Match, kids read from
a list of 50 books and then, as part of a team, they
compete against other teams, form other HP schools,
in a kind of "academic bowl" that is made
up of questions that test their recall of details
from the books read. For example, one question might
be, "in what book does the main character have
a lightning bolt shaped scar on his forehead?" Beginning
in October, we practice once a week at lunchtime and
then, beginning in January, we have matches against
other teams at the HP Library. Each team participates
in 6 matches between January and the end of March.
Book Match is coached by Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Arenson.
Please contact them if you have any questions. |

Student Council (aka "StudCo!")
is comprised of active 4th and 5th graders who want
to serve as role models for the rest of our school.
As student leaders of Indian Trail, we work to make
our school and community a better place through service
projects, fundraisers, and promoting school spirit.
Weekly Friday meetings during lunch and recess allow
us to brainstorm, discuss, and develop our projects.
Spirit weeks, "IT Goes Green" canvas bags
sold to benefit Room to Read, ISAT breakfasts, and
the annual spring carwash are just some of the projects
sponsored by student council. We also serve as the
school's Green Team and we are working to help IT
earn a recognition flag as part of the Earth Flag
Program. Advisor: Miss Pellerite |

The Chess Club re-opened
in September with a continued focus on instruction. It
is open to students in all grades at Indian Trail
and Elm Place Middle School, and meets on Mondays
and Wednesdays in the multi-purpose room from 3:20
to 5:20 pm. The club will run continuously
until May. Lessons are offered to players
at all levels of ability at least once each week. Club
members also have access to instructional software
in the computer lab and at home. Sets and
boards are provided. Parents and caregivers
are welcome, and members bring snacks. New
members are always welcome. Those who wish
may visit the club before deciding whether to join.
Members are divided into groups based on experience. Club
members belong to the club "ladder," which
ranks members based on a computerized system. The
club competes against other schools and in local
tournaments, and has won numerous awards.
The success of the Indian Trail club led to a district-wide
upgrade in chess programs described at www.hpchess.org.
The director of the Indian Trail club, and the
person spearheading the district-wide upgrade, is
Jerry Neugarten, a retired attorney new to Highland
Park. Jerry ran an award-winning scholastic
club in upstate New York for 11 years. His
club produced a national champion. For information,
call him at 847-831-2435
or e-mail him at jerryn@statetel.com |
