Classroom News:

In social studies we are beginning our study of the American Revolutionary War:  its causes, the Declaration of Independence, and the war itself.  After that it will be The Constitution and the Bill of Rights, followed by Westward Expansion and another simulation: Pioneers!  Go west young man!

In science, we're almost finished with our study of the Systems of the Human Body!   We've a lot of future doctors in our class;  ask them about  the ten different systems, their functions and major parts.  I think you will be surprised by how much they know!  The final unit of the year will be Weather, specifically instruments and what they measure, the atmosphere, clouds, reading weather maps, predicting weather, severe weather and safety, and reporting the weather.  Do you think your student will be as accurate as a professional meteorologist?  The odds are in his/her favor:)

In reading, we're heavily involved in the Read-a-thon (we'd love to be the class that reads the most, but I know we have some stiff competition this year...) through March 31.  After spring break, we'll be reading whole class novels:  Maniac Magee, The Phantom Tollbooth, The Westing Game, and The Great Gilly Hopkins.  These are terrific stories, populated with wonderful characters who have some interesting adventures, ones that the students really enjoy.  StoryTown will also continue.

In language arts, we'll begin our Drama unit with poetry  and oral reading, move into small skits and short plays, and culminate with a full length play that parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles are invited to attend.  Tentative date:  June 9 or 10...  Let's put on a show!

In computers, a powerpoint presentation will help students lead their conferences, and an imovie will tell about a favorite place.  Wait until you see the creativity on display!

Dates to keep in mind:

Conferences will be held Wednesday April 9 through Friday April 11.  I look forward to seeing you there!
4th/5th grade Sing is April 24th at 7pm in the big gym.  Break a leg!

Robert Crown Center for Health Education will come to Indian Trail to lead the fifth grade in learning about:  Drugs: Choice or Chance, and the Linda/Michael programs for girls/boys.  They're very good!

FunFest on May 27th!  Great fun for everyone!

On June 6, 5-J will go the The Grove to go back in time to pioneer days -- we'll make our own lunches, punch lanterns, make rope, dip candles, and weave.  Truly unforgettable.

Welcome spring!
