Food Drive
Moraine Twp. has been helping needy members of our community for over 20 years. Families or individuals come to the Food Pantry at 777 Central to choose what they need to help them prepare healthy meals. Some of the individuals are low income, disabled or elderly. The attached food list shows what is needed and appropriate for our residents. The drive starts now and ends Dec. 17. Food can be delivered to Lincoln School and placed in the collection boxes any time before that.
Recycling Program
We are pleased to announce that Highland Park District 112 has been chosen to participate in an innovative pilot program to recycle milk cartons and juice boxes. The program—sponsored by liquids packaging company Tetra Pak in partnership with Environmental Impact Initiative (EII), a local nonprofit—would keep as many as 500,000 drink containers out of landfills in a school year and will help lay the groundwork for drink-container recycling at the national level. In addition to building environmental awareness in our children, this program has the potential to make a significant impact on our environment because of the number of drink containers nationwide that are not being recycled. Although milk cartons and drink boxes are recyclable, many millions of packages end up in U.S. landfills each year due to a lack of recycling infrastructure for them. District 112, chosen as the pilot district because of its proven commitment to environmentalism, will help change that.
With our students' cooperation, milk cartons, juice boxes, and liquid pouches (e.g., Capri Sun-style packs) will be emptied at the end of each lunch period and collected apart from other trash. The volume and process will be monitored, the containers recycled and the data used to help expand the program. Parents can do their part by promoting awareness in the community of the need for improved drink-container collection and recycling the material in the home.

Junior Great Books is coming!
Our annual 6 week program is open to all 1st through 5th graders. Junior Great Books is a weekly discussion group of short stories, fairy tales, and poems. The discussions take place once a week for six weeks during lunch recess. Discussion group leaders are trained by the Great Books Foundation in the method of “Shared Inquiry”. This program is widely recognized for helping students to develop critical thinking skills.
If you are interested in volunteering as a group leader please contact Jen Elbaum at JennLax@aol.com or call
