Dual Language Frequently Asked Questions
How many periods of dual language are offered?
Three out of nine periods are dual language classes. Dual language students take DL social studies, DL physical education, and DL Spanish.
What is the difference between the dual language curriculum and non-dual language classes?
Dual language social studies and physical education curriculum parallels the monolingual classes. These classes share the same essential outcomes and parallel resources. DL Spanish is an entirely different class than the regular Spanish class. DL Spanish students learn freshman level curriculum in sixth grade, sophomore level in seventh grade, and junior level in eighth grade.
Who teaches DL classes?
Marina Polomo teaches sixth grade DL social studies and Spanish. Yolanda Saez teaches seventh grade DL social studies and Spanish. Jaime Barraza teaches eighth grade DL social studies and Spanish. Santi Rubio teaches 6-8th grade DL physical education.
Can students who place into Humanities and/or advanced math classes be in DL classes as well?
Dual language social studies, DL physical education, and DL Spanish are scheduled so that they do not conflict with Humanities and/or advanced level math courses.
Can students who have an IEP be in DL classes as well?
The special education team (including parents) make placement decisions according to each child's IEP. Students who only require resource take this class in lieu of DL Spanish. At least one dual language class (DL PE) is scheduled for students in enrolled in ERP.
How many students at Northwood are enrolled in the Dual Language Program?
About 20% of Northwood students are enrolled in Dual Language. There are currently 85 students enrolled in these classes.
Can I take a tour of the school or get more information before making my decision?
Yes. Please call the school office and speak to either principal - Jennifer Ferrari or Monica Schroeder at (847) 432-4770.
