Dear Parents of Third, Fourth and Fifth Grade Students:
Your child will participate in several physical fitness assessments this year in P.E. class. These assessments measure muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. Along with this letter. you will find the national standards for each of these events broken down by grade and gender.
It is important to remember that these assessments are not a test that your child can fail. They can however, show you and your child where he or she stands in comparison to other children within the United States. These assessments provide students and parents with data relating to current levels of fitness, which can be used as a basis for designing personal fitness goals or programs.
I believe that as students participate in the fitness assessments, they become more aware of their own fitness levels and of the benefits of fitness-related activities. I encourage all of my students to participate daily in vigorous physical play, sport, or activity. When physical activity is started at a young age, studies show it has more of a chance of becoming part of a lifelong habit.
I hope parents will discuss this assessment with their child, and that they impart the value of overall physical fitness and wellness. As a part of the Physical Education program at Red Oak, we will continually be practicing and evaluating progress on the components of the fitness assessment. I strongly encourage parents to practice these types of activities at home, and I hope that exercise can become part of your daily family routine.
Class rules:
3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will need a folder and pencil for PE class. These students will create their own PE portfolio. Students will write in fitness logs, keep track of personal fitness assessment scores, and will take quizzes after major units of study. These written activities will allow students to demonstrate knowledge of sports skills and PE related games.
Students must wear appropriate shoes for P.E. Shoes must have a rubber sole, cover toes, fit snuggly around the foot. Boots and sandals are not permitted.
If a child is sick or injured and needs to sit out of PE class for more than two consecutive class periods, a doctor’s note is required.
Students are encouraged to wear comfortable and appropriate clothing for PE class
Class homework policy:
All 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will have an alternative work assignment when they do not come prepared for PE class. This assignment will reinforce the concepts being studied and practiced during class.
