What are arrival and
departure procedures for students?
-
Most students arrive by bus
and will be dropped off in the west parking lot or the
front circle drive between 8:25 and 8:35 a.m. Students
are to play on the playground for the few minutes until
the first bell rings at 8:35 a.m., at which time they
line up in the designated area for their classroom. They
will be met at that door by their classroom teacher and
escorted into the classroom. Instruction begins at 8:36
a.m. Parents dropping off students should do so in the
special drop off area in the east parking
lot.
-
-
Please do not send or drop off
your child before 8:25 a.m. or allow them to stay after
school past 3:13 p.m. unless you are supervising them,
they are involved in after-school sports or other school
activities, or special arrangements have been made with
the teacher.
-
-
-
-
There is no parking in the
circle drive or along Stratford Road.
- May my child ride a bike,
skateboard or roller blades to school?
-
Students in all grades may
ride their bikes to school at their parents' discretion.
Children living west of the school must park their bikes
in the racks near the path and walk to school. Bike racks
are available under the trees for children living east of
the school. All bikes must be locked. Rollerblading and
skate boarding are not allowed at school. We strongly
urge that all bike riders wear helmets!
- What should I do if my
child is going to be absent or late
today?
-
To ensure the safety of our
students, please call the office in the morning when your
child will be absent or late. We will notify the teacher.
If your child is not in school and you have not called
us, our Operation Watch parent volunteer will try to
contact you at home or work. We encourage all Sherwood
families to join the Operation Watch program. Forms are
sent home each fall and are available in the
office.

- What if my child needs to
leave school early?
-
Students are not permitted to
leave the building unless accompanied by an adult. All
students leaving school early must be signed out in the
school office. If a doctor's appointment must be
scheduled during the school day, please send a note to
the teacher and come to the office to sign him or her
out. (Do not go to your child's classroom.) Children will
need to be signed back in by an adult when they return to
school.

Where should my child look
if he/she has lost something at school?
-
Please check the Lost & Found Tree located outside the office. Items of value are
usually kept in the school office.
-
-
What if my child forgets to
bring something important to school?
-
Students' possessions are
their responsibility. They should check before leaving
home each day for books, musical instruments, social
plans, rainy day arrangements, etc. In general, parents
should not need to bring these items to school. It is
important for children to become responsible and to
accept the consequences of their decisions. For that
reason we will not routinely allow students to call home
for missing or forgotten items. (If you must deliver
something to your child, please bring it to the office,
not to the classroom.)

What are the school bus
rules and procedures?
-
At one time or another, all
Sherwood students will ride a school bus. Therefore, all
parents and students should review bus rules and
procedures:
- Be at the bus stop five
minutes early, and be careful when the bus stops. Do not
move toward the bus until the bus has been brought to a
full stop.
- Be considerate and stay off
the people's lawns; don't litter.
- Form a straight line to board
the bus, then move quickly to the rear-most seat. Stay
seated at all times while you are on the bus.
- Do not leave your seat, kneel
or stand on your seat or in the aisle while the bus is in
motion. Keep aisles clear at all times.
- Be alert to a danger signal
from the driver. In the event of an emergency, remain in
your seat until the driver gives you specific
instructions. The driver is in charge of everyone on the
bus. Drivers and bus supervisors are to be shown every
respect and courtesy by students.
- Keep your heads, hands and
arms inside the bus at all times. Never throw things out
of the windows, and never lower the window past the
safety mark.
- Loud talking or unnecessary
noise can distract the driver's attention and could cause
an accident. Radio's, CD's, etc. should not be played on
the bus, except when used with earphones.
- TOTAL SILENCE at railroad
crossings.
- Never place belongings on edge
of seat or in the aisle. Place them where they can't
slide or fall, and check area for articles when leaving
the bus.
- Remain seated until the bus
stops at your stop. Always use the handrail when going up
or down the steps, to avoid falls. Don't go after
anything that falls under or in front of the bus. TELL
THE DRIVER FIRST.
- If you must cross a street,
tell the driver you are crossing. Proceed to a point 10
steps in front of the bus. Check the traffic in both
directions. Wait for the driver to signal "all clear." The driver will keep the bus safety arm out until you are
safely across the street. Cross, checking again for new
traffic from both ways at point of crossing. Walk, don't
run across the street.
- Treat bus equipment as you
would valuable furniture in your home.
- Never tamper with the bus or
any of its safety equipment.
- Help keep the bus safe and
clean at all times. Open containers of food or drinks of
any kind are not permitted on the bus. No animals are
allowed on the bus. Report anything damaged on the bus to
the driver as you leave.
- Drivers will stop at
designated stops ONLY. Special stops are not
permitted.
- Drivers have the authority to
reassign seats to maintain order and loading.
- Failure to adhere to these
guidelines may result in the loss of bus
privileges.

What are the bus discipline
procedures?
-
A four step procedure will be
used to discipline students who do not comply with the
rules listed above. This is the same procedure the
district has used for years, and it has helped us
maintain an excellent safety record. Keep in mind that
serious safety violations, including failure to buckle
up, are subject to immediate suspension of the bus riding
privilege.
- The bus driver will try to
correct student behavior by conferring with him or
her.
- A report will be made to the
principal for a second time offense. A warning letter
will be sent home to parents.
- Suspension of bus riding
privileges for up to five days for a third offense,
pending a review by the principal.
