Fall Reading Testing

Open House
Sherwood School’s annual Open House for parents only will be held on Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00 PM.  A short video with an overview of school goals and activities will be followed by presentations by classroom teachers on expectations and curriculum.  We hope you will mark your calendar to attend this important event.

Parent Handbook Feature
In each edition of “The Sherwood Times” we will feature one or two features from the Sherwood Parent Handbook (which will be distributed the week of Open House) as a reminder of policies and procedures related to our school.  Below are two of these procedures:

HEALTHY SNACKS
The district has developed some guidelines for nutrition in our schools.  These include the following:
•suggested school snacks include fresh fruit, veggies, dairy, crackers and low fat, low sugar carbohydrates
•suggested beverages include water, milk, 100% fruit juice (no sugar drinks)
•limit portion-size desserts
•candy will not be served at school during school hours
•students will receive one sweet treat and a beverage at holiday parties
•all snacks brought from home and served during and after school should be healthy

BIRTHDAY TREATS AND CELEBRATIONS
District 112 has supported efforts to encourage healthier snacks and modify birthday celebrations.  Snacks are not allowed at Sherwood School for
birthday celebrations.  We are faced with many children within our schools that are highly allergic
to peanut and peanut oil products.  We are sensitive to their health issues.  We are also concerned with the amount of interruptions to the instructional day that the distribution and consumption of birthday treats can bring.  We believe that recognition of students is important and will continue to celebrate the birthdays of our students with special recognitions in the classroom.  Parents may want to consider making a donation to the IMC to purchase a book for the library collection.  Mrs. Neumann maintains a collection of suitable books from which a child may select.  A plaque is placed in the book giving recognition that it was a gift in honor of a
child’s birthday.  Parents are asked not to send any food or other treat to celebrate their child’s birthday.  Do not send small tokens, prizes or goody bags.  The teacher will recognize each child on their birthday in the same manner to keep consistency for all children.  If treats are brought to school to be shared, they will be returned home with your child.  Thank you for your help and cooperation in promoting Healthy Happy Birthdays at Sherwood School!

Band & Orchestra Info. Mtg.
An informational meeting for students interested in beginning Band or Orchestra and their parents will be held on Wednesday, September 24th beginning at 6:00 PM at Elm Place School.  Please look for additional information to come home with the fourth and fifth grade students.

PTO President’s Message

Dear Sherwood Families,

The 2008-2009 school year has begun, and I would like to extend a special welcome to our new families, along with welcoming back all of our returning families.  I hope everyone had a great summer.

I would like to take a moment to remind everyone that just in case you have not completed your on-line PTO registration, there is still time to complete it by the end of the day.  Our PTO registration website closes today.  All forms and payments from the website are due by September 2nd.  I would like to personally thank Debbie Kanter.   Without her help, this website would not have been possible for Sherwood.  Please remember that this is our first attempt at using the website.  We will be registering for food days three times each year.  We hope to see continued improvements as we gain experience with this system.

Our kick-off social, which took place on August 22nd was a great way for everyone to reunite before school actually began.  Thank you to Melissa Arbetter and Judy Rich for providing the

hospitality on that day.  I also would like to thank Pam Gussis for all her hard work in making sure
that each student’s school supplies were delivered to their classrooms before the start of school.

In order for the PTO to be successful, it is so important for us to be able to communicate with you throughout the year.  The Sherwood Times, our school newsletter, is published every other Friday.  It contains a calendar of upcoming school events, along with other useful school information.

Powerschool announcements are Sherwood’s e-mail reminder system.  They are a wonderful way of keeping updated with the latest happenings at the school.  The Sherwood website, www.nssd112.org/sherwood , contains so much information about the school.  Lastly, I recommend that you sign up to receive our periodic PTO announcements via e-mail.  This is available on our on-line PTO registration.  In the event you did not sign up to receive PTO announcements and would like to be on that list, please send me your e-mail.

I hope you will join me at our first PTO meeting on Wednesday, September 3rd at 7:00 pm in the IMC.  Also, please mark your calendars on Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00 pm for Open House.

I strongly urge everyone to find a way to get involved in Sherwood’s PTO that would satisfy you.  I am looking forward to a great year!

Thank you,

Ellen Lasin
PTO President

Room Parent Information
All room parent forms are due in the office by Sept. 2nd.  If you did not receive a form the first day of school, you can download a copy from the

New School Newspaper Planned As A Learning Experience
Sherwood students will have the opportunity to publicize their news in a school newspaper this year.  Selected students will learn about interviewing, reporting, news writing and editing, layout, design, photography and judging editorial content.  Name and design competitions will be held for the newspaper’s name and design elements.  All grades may participate.  Designated class representatives will meet during recess or before school begins to learn about newspaper publishing and create the Sherwood Elementary School newspaper.
