| Children's Book Week is a weeklong celebration. It happens once a year and all over the country children, parents, and librarians fall back in love with a variety of different children's book authors and illustrators. The week of November 26-30, 2007, Wayne Thomas put on a celebration. All week long students enjoyed having author visits with their classmates. These visits were made possible by our generous PTA and the North Shore Education Foundation. We are very fortunate to have authors visit and share their books and experiences with our students. Check out the pictures below! |

Carolyn Crimi visited Wayne Thomas kindergarten classes. She is the author of a variety of children's books. Her visit was terrific! The kids enjoyed all of the excitement she brought for the presentation. Hopefully, we will see her again next year! Check out all of her material on her website. |
|
| Kevin Luthardt is an accomplished children's book author and illustrator. He is originally from the Chicagoland area. When he visited Wayne Thomas first graders, he introduced us to his latest book "The Vowel Family." The kids enjoyed learning about the writing process with Kevin. We hope to see his performance again next year! |

Esther Hershenhorn spoke with our second grade classes about the writing process. Esther is a Chicago native who enjoys teaching writing to all grade levels. She has a wonderful collection of materials, including "There Goes Lowell's Party!," "Chicken Soup," "Confe$$sions and $ecret$ of Howard J. Fingerhut," and "Fancy That." The students thoroughly enjoyed her talk. |
|
| Jamie Gilson started out as a junior high teacher and then did a variety of other things such as writing for Chicago Magazine and writing and producing a radio show for Chicago Public Schools. She has written many fiction books. During her time with Wayne Thomas third graders, Jamie shared stories about her books and where the ideas come from. We are very excited to read her last book "Chess! I love it! I love it! I love it!" |

Laurie Lawlor visited the fourth graders at Wayne Thomas. Her manuscripts are mostly historical fiction chapter books. She enjoys giving classroom and library presentations and has conducted writing workshops for all levels of students, from primary grades through adults. She is a professor at Columbia College and National-Louis in Chicago, IL. |
|
| Frannie Billingsley is a fantasy writer. She is a resident of the Chicagoland area. Franny has two wonderful chapter books called "Well Wished" and "The Folkkeeper." In the spring of 2008 her latest book, "Big Bad Bunny," was published. Hopefully our fifth graders will get to visit with Mrs. Billingsley again. |

The Birthday Book Program offers a way for you to celebrate your child's birthday and make a lasting contribution to the Wayne Thomas IMC.
How it works: Mrs. Hales sends home a birthday book letter prior to your child's birthday or half-birthday. After you receive the letter and decide you would like to participate, you send a check to the IMC, payable to the Wayne Thomas Activity Fund. The IMC staff helps your child select a book from the new book selection and will use your donation to purchase additional books for our school library collection. The book becomes a part of the library collection and is enjoyed by children for years to come. In the past few years many fine additions have been made to the IMC and our collection has benefited thanks to your generosity. A name plate is placed inside the chosen book and your child's picture is displayed on our Birthday Book Bulletin Board in the IMC.
Thank you very much for your generous support of the IMC! |

Who: All 4th and 5th graders are invited to participate in Book Match. In October, Mrs. Hales forms the teams. Each team consists of four to seven players (only five at a time play at any meet). Once the teams are formed, the players decide on a team name and participate in practices and book matches together.
What: Book Match is a recreational reading program. Teams read from a special book list and match wits with other readers from WT and other district schools in tournaments. The Book Match reading list is selected by the Youth Services Department at the Highland Park Public Library. It contains fifty titles of varying difficulty and genre. The new reading list is available in the Youth Services Department beginning June 1 of each year. Mrs. Hales distributes the list in June of each year to every student entering 4th and 5th grade. Students who are interested in joining Book Match are encouraged to begin reading from the reading list during the summer. The WT Library has at least two cpies of every book plus the books are available at the Highland Park Public Library.
How: Teams practice once a week from October through March. Practice is held during recess in the WT IMC. Beginning in January, matches are held at the Highland Park Public Library. Two to four teams participate in a match. The spokesperson for each team selects a packet of questions as the team arrives. The questions are asked round robin, twelve questions per team. All questions can be answered by the title of a book. |
When: The Intermediate Book Match reading list will be available in the WT IMC and at the Highland Park Public Library beginning June 1. Sign up by seeing Mrs. Hales in September. The Book Match season begins in January and ends in March. The schedule is made by the Highland Park Public Library and is available in early December. If after school activities conflict with the Book Match schedule, Mrs. Hales will find a substitute and will ask the student who has to miss one of their matches to substitute for another team on an alternative date.
Where: Practice is held in the WT IMC on Tuesdays during recess. All meets are held in the Meeting Room at the Highland Park Public Library. The meets for 4th and 5th graders begin at 3:45. If you should have any questions about Book Match, please contact Mrs. Hales. |

Helen Lester Visit
Helen Lester has been writing children's books for many years now. Before she began writing books she was a second grade teacher in Chicago, IL. Through her experience as a classroom teacher, she was able to write about different students she came in contact with and used their personalitites for different characters in her children's books. Our school fell in love with these wonderful characters, such as Tacky the Pentuin and Wodney Wat.
Mrs. Lester visited our school on April 14, 2008. |
National Library Week April 14-18, 2008
This event was first sponsored in 1958, to make more citizens aware of how important reading was to our country. During this time and still today more people spend money and time listening to the radio, watching television, and talking on the telephone than reading books. National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) which is celebrated in libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. |
Dr. Seuss' Birthday
The week of March 17-21, 2008, Wayne Thomas celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday. Our whole school got the chance to take a school-wide field trip to see the movie Horton Hears a Who. We remember Dr. Seuss for a variety of reasons, for his wonderful characters such as the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, and Thidwick the Moose. We remember his joyous rhymes, rhythms, and repetitions, Sam-I-Am, one fish, two fish, red fish, and a blue fish. However, most of all we remember Dr. Seuss for the stories that enticed us to want to read more! |

EBSCOhost Research Databases |
Searchasaurus: Three popular elementary and middle school databases can be accessed via Searchasaurus. Searchasaurus is an easy way for young researchers to experience online searching. It is an animated interface with a dinosaur theme that encourages students to enhance and develop basic search methodologies. Searchasaurus offers Lexile limiters (reading level), making it easy for students to read and research only appropriately challenging materials.
Kids Search: Kids Search interface combines a search engine with a child-friendly, graphically-rich design that is both powerful and fun to use. Kids Search makes it easier for students to look for their subjects of interest by automatically searching across all applicable databases simultaneously and the ability to search by topic, subtopic, or keywords.
Student Research Center: Through the Student Research Center, users can easily pre-determine which content sources (e.g., magazines, newspapers, biographies, country reports, film & video) will be included with their search. They can also search their databases by topic heading, make use of an online dictionary and encyclopedia, explore the top searches of the day, and even limit their search according to appropriate Lexile reading levels. *
