Upcoming Author Visit
We are very excited that author Jacqueline Davies will be visiting Wayne Thomas on Wednesday, March 7. She will be giving two presentations, one to grades K-2 entitled “A Writer’s life” and one to grades 3-5 entitled “When Life Hands you Lemons.” If you are a parent of a student in grades 3-5 you may have noticed that your child received a copy of Ms. Davies book The Lemonade War. Students throughout the district are currently reading The Lemonade War in preparation for Ms. Davies visit. Thank you to the Wayne Thomas PTA for graciously donating the books as well as sponsoring the visit. As with past author visits we have partnered with The Book Stall in Winnetka to make additional titles available for sale. You can access the order form here. Orders forms are due back by March 1.
More information on Jacqueline Davies, her books, and her presentations can be found on her home page, www.jacquelinedavies.net
Grade Level Projects
K-2 are currently reading and discussing the Monarch Award nominees. The Monarch Award is the primary grade Illinois Reader's Choice Award. Every year a group of librarians from across the state choose 20 books to be Monarch Award nominees. Students across the state read and discuss these books, and then beginning on February 15th vote for their favorites. In order to vote students must have read at least five of the titles. You can find the master list below, ask your child about what we've read so far! School and state winners will be announced on March 15.
3rd graders are finishing up their continent projects. Students chose a continent and picked three places they would like to visit. They researched their continents using online databases and made a Google Slide presentation to show what they learned. This was a great first experience doing research on their Chromebooks.
4th grade recently finished reading folk tales from around the world. They read and compared two stories from each continent. We are now working on keyword searching techniques which they will use as part of an immingration related project.
5th grade has been working dillegently on their genius hour projects. These are projects that allow the students to research a topic of their choice, create a presentation on that topic, and then share with their peers what they have learned. Project topics include the (extremely popular) iPhone X, Disney, how to get more subscribers to your vlog, why curveballs curve, dogs, and the history of hockey. Students are in the midst of their presentations.
