Long-Range Facilities Plan

North Shore School District 112's Long-Range Facilities Plan is a multi-phase effort to modernize our schools and create learning environments that meet the needs of students today and into the future. The work includes major building renovations, improvements to safety and security, updated learning spaces, accessibility improvements and investments in more efficient and sustainable facilities.

The plan began with the modernization of the district's two middle schools and has continued with major elementary school renovations funded in large part through the 2022 referendum. With several projects now complete, work continues at Braeside and Wayne Thomas while planning moves forward for Phase 3.

Phase 1

The first phase of the Long-Range Facilities Plan focused on the district's two middle schools, Northwood and Edgewood.

  • Construction at Northwood began in 2019 and was completed in 2021.
  • Construction at Edgewood began in 2021 and was completed in April 2023.
  • Upgrades were completed at Oak Terrace to accommodate the Early Childhood program. Additionally, the main entrance was relocated to the north side of the building.

Phase 2

Phase 2 includes major renovations at Indian Trail, Ravinia, Sherwood, Braeside and Wayne Thomas elementary schools. These projects are funded through the 2022 referendum approved by District 112 voters.

  • Construction began in August 2025 and continues during the 2026-2027 school year. Students and staff remain temporarily located at Green Bay School, 1936 Green Bay Road.

    The district expects the Braeside community to return to the renovated building in 2027. An exact return date will be shared as construction progresses.

Wayne Thomas Elementary School

  • Construction began in summer 2026, with the district holding a groundbreaking ceremony on July 29, 2026.

    Wayne Thomas students and staff are temporarily located at 2031 Sheridan Road, formerly Elm Place Middle School, and will remain there for the entire 2026-2027 school year while construction takes place at the Wayne Thomas building.

Phase 2 Timeline

Phase 3

Phase 3 focuses on preparing Oak Terrace Elementary School for the district's K-5 Dual Language community to come together there beginning with the 2027-2028 school year.

As part of the plan approved by the Board of Education in June 2025:

  • The K-5 Dual Language program will come together at Oak Terrace beginning in 2027-2028.
  • Red Oak Elementary School will close following the 2026-2027 school year.
  • The Early Childhood program will move to Green Bay School beginning in 2027-2028.
  • Renovations will be completed at Oak Terrace to support the expanded school community.

The Board approved design work for the Oak Terrace renovations in July 2026. Planned improvements include a new food service area, accessibility and security improvements, updates to classrooms and shared learning spaces, new furniture and selected lighting and interior upgrades. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2027 and be completed during the summer.
