Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee
The Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) serves as a vital voice for English Learners (EL) and their families. BPAC plays an advisory role, helping parents navigate district programs, advocate for their children, and actively engage in the community. Through collaboration and support, BPAC strengthens the partnership between families, educators, and the district, ensuring that the needs of bilingual students are met.
In Illinois, school districts with 20 or more English Learners (ELs) from the same language background are required to establish a Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC). The committee serves an advisory role, representing the interests of EL students and their families. BPAC must meet at least four times per year, and the majority of its members must be parents of EL students. The committee helps families understand bilingual education programs, advocate for their children’s needs, and promotes parent engagement in educational decisions and district policies.
These regulations are set forth by the Illinois School Code to ensure equitable access to education for ELs.
Mission and Goals
BPAC is committed to fostering advocacy, education and partnership between families and schools to support the success of English Learners. We strive to empower parents and guardians through education and resources, ensuring they can advocate for their children's academic and linguistic needs. Through collaboration with school staff, BPAC strengthens relationships that promote equitable opportunities, cultural understanding, and academic achievement for all bilingual students. Together, we build a community that values diversity and student success.
