Middle School Single-Subject Acceleration
District 112 utilizes a data-driven approach to ensure every student is placed in the most appropriate learning environment.
At the middle school level, students may be considered for single-subject acceleration in math or English Language Arts. The specific criteria and available placement changes depend on the student's current grade and course.
Initial academic course placement in the fall of sixth grade is based on the District's fifth-to-sixth-grade course placement process.

Identification Process
There are two avenues for identification of students for middle school single-subject acceleration.
Proactive District Identification
District 112 automatically reviews existing data for students in Grades 6-7. Students who meet the initial eligibility criteria for single-subject acceleration are identified through this proactive review.
Families of identified students are contacted directly by District 112 and invited to formally apply for further acceleration screening.
Parent/Guardian Request
Parents or guardians may also request that their child be considered for single-subject acceleration.
Submit a Parent/Guardian Request for Acceleration
Upon review of the request and relevant student data, District 112 will contact the family directly. Families will either:
- Receive the option to proceed with further acceleration screening if the student qualifies.
- Be notified that the student does not currently meet the initial academic requirements for further screening toward single-subject acceleration.
Math Acceleration
Initial criteria for middle school math acceleration are based on NWEA MAP math scores. Additional data are considered for students who meet the initial criteria and apply for single-subject math acceleration.
| Current Course | Accelerated Placement | Fall | Winter | Spring |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Grade 6 Math |
Grade 6 Advanced Math | N/A | 232 | 236 |
| Grade 6 Advanced Math | Grade 6 Accelerated Math | N/A | 250 | 254 |
| Grade 7 Math | Grade 7 Advanced Math | 233 | 238 | 240 |
| Grade 7 Advanced Math | Grade 7 Accelerated Math | 256 | N/A | N/A |
| Grade 8 Math | Grade 8 Advanced Math | 241 | N/A | N/A |
Additional Math Criteria
Students who meet the applicable MAP cut score must also meet the additional criteria for their placement pathway.
Grade 6 Math to Grade 6 Advanced Math, Grade 7 Math to Grade 7 Advanced Math and Grade 8 Math to Grade 8 Advanced Math:
- MAP: Students must meet the score associated with the 2025 NWEA IAR Linking Study that projects the student to be Proficient at the applicable grade level.
- Course Performance: Students must have an average of at least 90% on all unit tests and quizzes in the applicable current or previous math course.
Grade 6 Advanced Math to Grade 6 Accelerated Math and Grade 7 Advanced Math to Grade 7 Accelerated Math:
- MAP: Students must meet the score associated with the 2025 NWEA IAR Linking Study that projects the student to be Above Proficient at the applicable grade level.
- Course Performance: Students must have an average of at least 90% on all unit tests and quizzes in the applicable current or previous math course.
Math Placement Timing
Placement timing depends on the course and when eligibility is confirmed. Because Illinois School Code requires a full year of Algebra 1, students may only accelerate into 7th Grade Accelerated Math or 8th Grade Advanced Math at the start of the school year.
- Grade 6 Math to Grade 6 Advanced Math: A placement change identified in January will occur immediately. A placement change identified in May will take effect the following school year.
- Grade 7 Math to Grade 7 Advanced Math: Placement changes identified in September or January will occur immediately. A placement change identified in May will take effect the following school year.
- Grade 7 Advanced Math to Grade 7 Accelerated Math: Students may only accelerate into this course at the start of the school year.
- Grade 8 Math to Grade 8 Advanced Math: Students may only accelerate into this course at the start of the school year.
Algebra I Requirement
Grade 7 Accelerated Math and Grade 8 Advanced Math serve as high school Algebra I. Illinois School Code requires students to complete a full year of Algebra I for high school graduation. Students therefore may only accelerate into these courses at the start of the school year.
Students enrolled in Grade 6 Accelerated Math or Grade 7 Accelerated Math are already single-subject accelerated.
English Language Arts Acceleration
Initial criteria for middle school English Language Arts acceleration are based on NWEA MAP reading scores. Additional data are considered for students who meet the initial criteria and apply for single-subject ELA acceleration.
| Current Course | Accelerated Placement | Fall | Winter | Spring |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 6 ELA | Grade 6 Accelerated ELA | N/A | 236 | 237 |
| Grade 7 ELA | Grade 7 Accelerated ELA | 237 | 238 | 239 |
| Grade 8 ELA | Grade 8 Accelerated ELA | 244 | 245 | N/A |
Additional ELA Criteria
Students who meet the applicable MAP cut score must also meet the following criteria:
- MAP: Students must meet the score associated with the 2025 NWEA IAR Linking Study that projects the student to be Above Proficient at the applicable grade level.
- Course Performance: Students must have an average of at least 90% on unit reading tests and unit essays.
The course performance data reviewed depend on the student's grade level and the point in the school year when acceleration is being considered:
- Grade 6: Performance in the student's current ELA course is reviewed.
- Grade 7: For September consideration, performance in the student's previous ELA course is reviewed. For January or May consideration, performance in the student's current ELA course is reviewed.
- Grade 8: Performance in the student's previous ELA course is reviewed.
ELA Placement Timing
- Grade 6 ELA to Grade 6 Accelerated ELA: A placement change identified in January will occur immediately. A placement change identified in May will take effect the following school year.
- Grade 7 ELA to Grade 7 Accelerated ELA: Placement changes identified in September or January will occur immediately. A placement change identified in May will take effect the following school year.
- Grade 8 ELA to Grade 8 Accelerated ELA: Placement changes identified in September or January will occur immediately. A placement change identified in May will take effect the following school year.
Students enrolled in Grade 6 Accelerated ELA or Grade 7 Accelerated ELA are already single-subject accelerated.
