Principal’s Message

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year and our second year as Red Oak Dual Language Academy! Our first day of school is Monday, August 19th and we cannot wait to see everyone! It is going to be an amazing year!

Red Oak believes very strongly in parental involvement in a child's education. We encourage you to volunteer in your child's classroom and participate in school-sponsored activities when possible. You are your child's first teacher! Our first school-sponsored event is our Back to School Kickoff/Meet and Greet on Friday, August 16 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to drop off school supplies and meet our Red Oak staff members who will be in their classrooms to visit with families. In addition, students and their families are welcome to play on our playground from 3:00 - 3:30 p.m.

If you are new to Red Oak this year, another important event to make note of is our New Family Orientation. This event is geared toward families who are new to our school, but is of course open to all of our Red Oak families. It will take place in the gym at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 8. It will be an opportunity to learn more about our school procedures, meet your principal, and answer any questions you may have.

One of the simplest ways to ensure your child’s success in school is to send him or her to school on a regular basis. Did you know that poor attendance is a strong predictor of whether children can read proficiently by the end of third grade? Research shows that missing only two days of school per month negatively impacts student achievement. We will closely monitor student absences and tardies throughout the year. Parents will be notified if students are showing patterns of absenteeism. We want your child to be as successful as possible! Please avoid taking family vacations during the school year as these absences will be considered unexcused.

During the school year you can expect ongoing two-way communication between home and school. A newsletter will be published each week and will be emailed directly to you. We will also post weekly announcements on our school website at: https://www.nssd112.org/redoak . Emergency communication will be communicated via Blackboard Connect through email and/or automated phone calls.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to reach out. Please know that we are here to help your child be successful in school. Feel free to stop by the office, contact me by phone at 224-765-3750 or send me an email at nbellini@nssd112.org.  We look forward to seeing you in August and working with you and your child this school year! Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nicole Bellini

Principal

School Supplies

If you ordered school supplies from PTO, they will be delivered to your child’s classroom by Friday, August 16. If you have not yet purchased school supplies, please see the attached school supply lists to aid you in your shopping.

Class Lists

Class lists will not be posted on the school websites. Parents may check Infinite Campus on Friday, August 9th at 4:00 p.m. to find out who their child’s teacher will be for the 2019-2020 school year.

Organic Life Breakfast and Lunch Program

As you know, Red Oak offers a hot breakfast and lunch program through Organic Life. Organic Life uses fresh ingredients to offer meals that are natural and free of artificial growth hormones and preservatives. Parents may pay for meals online through the Infinite Campus - Parent Portal. Please see the attached instructions. Students may also pay by cash or check at the cash register in the cafeteria. The cost of breakfast is $2.00 and lunch is $3.00. Milk is included in the cost of the meal. Breakfast is served every day beginning at 8:30 a.m. Lunch is served daily from 11:50 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. (Kindergarten - 2nd Grade) and 12:15 - 12:40 p.m. (3rd - 5th Grade). We encourage families to take advantage of this healthy breakfast and lunch option for their children. Please see the attached documents for more information.

Innovation Learning Before and After School Care Program at Red Oak

Childcare is available before and after school at Red Oak Elementary. Innovation Learning will offer this program everyday before and after school. Childcare will be available immediately before school starting at 6:00 a.m. and immediately after school until 6:00 p.m. Families may register for the program at: https://www.nssd112.org/InnovationLearning

District 112 Transportation

Bus service is provided free to students who qualify. Other students may enroll for optional busing on a fee basis if space on the bus and routes can accommodate these students. Busing information regarding routes, stops and times will be mailed in August. Any questions regarding busing should be directed to the Transportation Department at 847-765-3011.

Arrival and Dismissal

Our school day begins at 8:44 a.m. and ends at 3:21 p.m. Students should plan on arriving at school as close to 8:44 a.m. as possible, but in no case before 8:30 a.m. because supervision is not provided until that time. Students who are participating in the breakfast program at Red Oak should arrive at 8:30 a.m. Supervisors will escort students into the building at 8:44 a.m. and instruction will begin at 8:50 a.m. Students arriving after 8:50 will be considered tardy. Please help to get your students to school on time.

Car riders can be dropped off/picked up in the Car Rider Loading Zone - which is between the crosswalk at the north end of the building and the school sign.

Students arriving early for an approved supervised activity should plan to arrive as close as possible to the beginning time of the meeting or activity, but not more than 5 minutes before.  They should enter through the front door with their backpacks and go to the room assigned for their activity. Activity leaders are responsible for supervising these students until 8:44 a.m. when they will report to their classrooms. In the case of inclement weather, students will enter the building but not before 8:30 a.m.

At the end of the school day, buses will load at the south end of the building. Buses will travel down the left lane of Red Oak, past the car rider line.  Please be cautious when waiting to drop off or pick up your child(ren). Please see the attached Arrival and Dismissal Procedures for more information.

From the Nurse’s Office

Here are a few mid-summer reminders:  Stay hydrated (drink water), use your sunscreen and keep the insect repellent handy.

For incoming Kindergarten students, please send in the health forms by the first day of school and no later than October 15th.  For incoming Kindergarten and second graders, please complete your dental examination report as soon as possible and by October 15th by the latest. The State of Illinois has mandated that Kindergarten students complete a vision report by no later than October 15th.  If you need any of the health forms, they will be available through the nurse’s office at Red Oak.

Please read the medication guidelines by the district carefully.  Absolutely NO MEDICATION (including over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol, etc.) will be given out without the North Shore School District 112 Request for the Administration of Medicine form being properly filled out by both the physician and parent, and the medication being properly labeled by the pharmacy and in the original bottle.  Authorization medical forms are available in the Nurse’s Office. Every year these forms need to be updated by the doctor with current information. All medical forms can also be downloaded from the District's website at: https://www.nssd112.org/domain/30 .

If you have any questions or need any assistance, please email our school nurse, Mrs. David, at ldavid@nssd112.org.  She will be happy to do whatever she can to assist you. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Red Oak Open House

Red Oak Elementary will hold its annual Open House for parents only on Thursday, September 12th from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. Classroom teachers will present information on the curriculum and programs.  Presentations are made at two different times so parents with more than one child can attend. We look forward to seeing you!

Angel Fund

Angel Funds are scholarships available to families who qualify for financial assistance. They are available for a variety of extra-curricular activities and other special school happenings. We want all of our students to have the opportunity to participate in Red Oak events and school life. You will see “Angel Funds Available” mentioned on school flyers for activities that have these scholarships.  Please see Mrs. Patricia Garcia in the office if you would like to know if you qualify. These funds are available thanks to various PTO & 112 Foundation fundraisers.

PBIS

Red Oak will continue to implement our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program in the fall. PBIS is a school-wide behavior intervention program that explicitly teaches students consistent behavior expectations in all areas of the building. It is a system that recognizes students for demonstrating positive behavior with ‘Rockets’. Students who earn Rockets are entered into a weekly raffle for prizes! PBIS has levels or tiers of support to meet the needs of all students.

The Red Oak PBIS Universal Team (Tier 1) meets regularly to analyze behavior data and develop lessons for staff to use with students. Teachers implement the plans that the Universal Team develops. Our staff works with students in understanding classroom rules based on the Red Oak PBIS behavior expectations. Students who need additional support with behavior participate in our Tier 2 PBIS program. These students participate in “Check in/Check out”. Check in/Check out is a program in which students are assigned a mentor teacher to check in with in the morning. This teacher reviews the student’s behavior goals and encourages the student to meet his or her goal. The student checks out with the teacher at the end of the day to monitor the child’s progress towards their goal and to encourage continued positive behavior.

Red Oak will work hard to maintain safe learning environments through our continuation of a bullying prevention program that will be taught to the students though our Second Step Social Emotional Learning Curriculum. These lessons are taught and reinforced throughout the school year.

We encourage you to be active in our PBIS program by participating in our school’s PBIS activities and encouraging your child to do so as well. We appreciate your support!

PTO Presidents’ Message

Dear Red Oak Families,

We hope that everyone is having a wonderful summer!  It’s hard to believe that August is just a few weeks away.  We are really looking forward to the 2019-2020 school year and are so excited for our Red Oak community to be together again.  There are a lot of fun events and programs planned for this year; dates will be released soon so you can mark your calendars!

August kicks off with some important PTO items – Membership and After School Enrichment enrollment!  First up is a reminder to register on the PTO website. You will be included in the class directory and able to purchase your family’s PTO membership for the upcoming school year.  Registration and Membership sales will begin on Monday, August 12th .

Funds raised through the sale of PTO memberships account for about 1/3 of the funds collected by the organization each year. These funds will go directly to help support our programs and events and will help cover the costs of the Halloween and Valentines Day classroom parties.  A Basic membership for the 2019-2020 school year will be $30/family. We will also be offering the Premium Membership again this year for $55. In addition to the basic amount, this membership also includes a $25 donation to our Angel Fund (this fund is used specifically to help offset enrollment fees for enrichment classes for those students who otherwise would not be able to attend).  Purchase your membership (Basic or Premium) on our website www.redoakpto.org.

Included with your paid membership is access to our PTO directory smartphone app.  The directory app contains family contact information organized by class and searchable by last name, an absent alert feature that can be used if your child is sick and won’t be at school and more.  Download the ‘Paperless PTO’ app from the App Store or on Google Play. You will use the same PTO website email and password login for the app. Please Note:  Current Families - your current app will not work past August 9th.  Once you purchase your Red Oak PTO membership and update your student’s information, your app will work again.

Information about the Red Oak PTO, our events and our online sales can be found by visiting www.redoakpto.org.  If you are a new family, you will need to create an account on the PTO website.  Once on the website, click on the ‘Create Your Account’ link and fill in your information.  Please note that the security code to complete your account setup is 1234.  Once you have created your account, you must add your student(s) and select their grades and teachers.  You can also check a box to indicate if you are interested in being a room parent for your child’s classroom.  Step by step instructions are attached to this email and available on the PTO website. Existing Red Oak Families, your account (email and password) will be same as last year.  You will still need to log into the site and update your student’s information (grade and teacher) to reflect the upcoming school year.  Don’t forget to check the box if you are interested in being a room parent this year. For questions or issues with creating or updating your account, please contact Jenn Boiles at jenniferboiles@yahoo.com or 847-275-6368.

In addition to your PTO membership, you can purchase a birthday book(s) for your student(s) (your child will choose a new book to be placed in the Red Oak library in honor of their birthday) or make a separate donation to the Angel Fund. To purchase the items mentioned above, log onto the PTO website – www.redoakpto.org (new families will need to create an account) and click on ‘For Sale’.  The website will instruct you on what you need to do to complete your purchase.

PTO after school enrichment class registration will use the redoak.yuz.us site. If you were a Red Oak family last year and enrolled using this site, you can use your same login information.  New families will need to create a new account in order to enroll in the classes. Classes will be offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:25 - 4:25 p.m. Bus transportation home is available. Please note that classes will only run if the minimum enrollment is met.   Registration will open soon and will close on August 28th; LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Class descriptions and schedules will be available on the redoak.yuz.us site (paper copies will be available in the office if you do not have internet access).

Don’t forget to mark the following August dates on your calendar:

Thursday, August 8th – New Family Orientation 6:30 p.m.

Friday, August 16th – Back to School Meet and Greet  - 2:30-3:30 p.m. (pre-ordered school supplies will be delivered to your child’s classroom by today)

Monday, August 19th – 1st Day of School Welcome Coffee 8:45 -10 a.m.

Thursday, August 29th – Taste of Red Oak - 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Finally, we’d like to remind all our families that volunteers are a vital part of the Red Oak PTO.   We would not be able to support our teachers, staff or our students without the time our volunteers dedicate. Thank you to all the volunteers who are already signed up to run programs and events this year! We hope that if you have not had a chance to sign-up that you will consider donating some of your time to our wonderful school. The benefits of volunteering are enormous and so worthwhile.  Just remember it does not take a lot of time to make a positive impact on our school and kids!

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.  Thank you!
