Fall 2017 Teaching and Learning Update

Dear District 112 Families,

 

The Teaching and Learning Department is excited to begin a new school year! Our department places a strong priority on ensuring that all pre-kindergarten through 8th grade students in District 112 experience a consistent and enriching academic experience in all content areas, with the important goal of ensuring that our students make academic progress, and the results of our student performance are utilized to inform programmatic, material, and curricular decisions. During the 2017-2018 school year, the Teaching and Learning Department will focus on the following key priorities:

 

Elementary

  • Adopting and implementing a math material resource and providing professional development to all kindergarten through 5th-grade teachers

  • Developing and implementing a consistent, standards-aligned curriculum in math

  • Developing and implementing a consistent, standards-aligned curriculum in English language arts

  • Developing and implementing a consistent, standards-aligned curriculum in writing

  • Implementing Lucy Calkins Writing Units of Study materials and providing professional development to all kindergarten through 5th-grade teachers

 

Dual Language Program

  • Writing dual language units of study

  • Developing and implementing a consistent, standards-aligned curriculum in math

 

Middle School

  • Piloting Discovery Education’s Math Techbook, with a goal of adoption and full implementation in the 2018-2019 school year

  • Reviewing and assessing English language arts materials and curriculum (reading and writing), with a goal of adoption and full implementation in the 2018-2019 school year

  • Developing and implementing a consistent, standards-aligned curriculum in math

  • Developing and implementing a consistent, standards-aligned curriculum in English language arts

  • Collaborating with Highland Park High School to ensure course alignment in Algebra I and geometry

 

Advanced Learning Opportunities (ALO)

  • Strengthening the identification process to ensure that all learners in need of enrichment receive instruction that meets their specific academic and learning needs

  • Developing a delivery model that reflects best practices and provides meaningful service to learners

 

Instructional Strategies

  • Providing training to all pre-kindergarten through 8th-grade teachers in instructional strategies that focus on student engagement and 21st-century skills, such as collaboration

 

The Teaching and Learning department is committed to supporting the students and families in North Shore School District 112 and ensuring that each child reaches his/her maximum potential. We are looking forward to a year of success and collaboration with the District 112 community.
