NSSD112 Approves New Oak Terrace Principal

Highland Park, Highwood and Fort Sheridan, IL – The North Shore School District 112 (NSSD112) Board of Education approved the hiring of Amy Cengel as the Principal of Oak Terrace Elementary School at a Board of Education special meeting on July 25, 2017. Cengel will officially join the Oak Terrace team on August 1, 2017. Cengel replaces former Oak Terrace Principal, Alexandra Escobar who resigned effective July 25, 2017.

“We are delighted to welcome Ms. Cengel to District 112,” said NSSD112 Co-Interim Superintendent Ed Rafferty. "She is an innovative educator who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills through her experiences in District 62. We are confident she will be a tremendous resource for Oak Terracestudents, parents, and staff.”

Cengel comes to NSSD112 from Des Plaines School District 62 where she has served the majority of her career in education. Prior to education, she worked at TCF Bank in community relations and marketing before returning to school to obtain her teaching degree. In 2003, Cengel became a 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies and Science Teacher at Perspectives Charter School in Chicago. She began her career at District 62 in 2006 as a 6th and 8th Teacher of Literacy, Social Studies, and English as a second language (ESL) at Chippewa Middle School. She then became District 62’s District Instructional Coach in 2012 and held that post until 2014. Cengel became the Principal of South Elementary School in 2014 and served in that capacity until being appointed to the Oak Terrace principalship.

Cengel is a strong believer that a collaborative, data-driven approach to education is key to building a supportive and focused learning environment. Among her many professional accomplishments, she developed a social-emotional support program designed to build resilience in at-risk students, implemented a building-wide data analysis protocol to ensure a continued focus on student achievement and progress towards grade level standards for all students, and led monthly district-wide staff development workshops focusing on the use of different instructional techniques to address the needs of diverse learners.

Cengal earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Sociology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, a Masters in Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago in Educational Leadership, and endorsements in bilingual education, ESL, social studies, Spanish, and language arts. She also completed the Administration and Leadership Program, leading to administrative certification, from National Louis University. Cengal is experienced with educating English Language Learners and speaks Spanish.

"I am honored and excited for the opportunity to serve the Oak Terrace community, said Cengal. “I look forward to working closely alongside our staff and our families to ensure that we are providing the best possible learning environment for our students."
